Koos Serierse

Jacobus "Koos" Serierse (born April 12, 1936 in Rotterdam ; † September 7, 2017 ) was a Dutch jazz musician ( double bass , also piano ).

Live and act

Serierses was promoted early on by his father, who ran a few cafes and occasionally appeared as an accordionist himself; his father bought him a bass. The young Serierse plays as a duo with a pianist, but initially concentrated on his work as a photographer. Since 1961 he played regularly with Toon Hermans , with whom the first recordings were made. In 1964/65 he belonged to the Dutch Swing College Band , with whom he also toured internationally. Then he found work in the Hilversum radio orchestras, for example with Harry Bannink. He also played with The Stork Town Dixie Kids , whose drummer was Han Bennink . Serierse still belonged to the band of the cabaret artist Paul van Vliet .

I.a. In the following years he played with Gijs Hendriks All Star Folkdance Orchestra, Herman Schoonderwalt , Johnny Meijer , Chris Hinze , and in the Jan Huydts trio , furthermore with Rita Hovink , Ad van den Hoed , Joop Scholten , Pim Jacobs , René Thomas , Rob Madna , Cees Smal , Rob Franken , Wim Overgaauw and Pia Beck . Since the mid-1970s Serierse (with drummer Eric Ineke ) belonged to Rein de Graaff's trio . In 1977 he toured Germany with Johnny Griffin , Rein de Graaff and Art Taylor ; in the following years he was a member of the Rein de Graaff / Dick Vennik Quartet and the Sky Masters .

After a course with Rob Madna , he became a teacher at the Hilversum Conservatory in 1978. For his department for light music he developed a curriculum. He taught for a total of 23 years (also in Rotterdam) and wrote the textbook Walking Bass , which was published in 1983.

He has also worked with Stan Getz , Dizzy Gillespie & AVRO's Big Band, Lee Konitz , Al Cohn , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Dave Pike / Charles McPherson ( Bluebird , Timeless 1988), Ronnie Cuber and the trio of David Fathead Newman , Marchel Ivery and Rein De Graaff. In the field of jazz he was involved in 92 recording sessions between 1964 and 1996, in 2003 he was still involved in the album Laura Fygi at Ronnie Scott's .

Koos Serierse was the father of jazz drummer Marcel Serierse and grandfather of the singer Anna Serierse .
