High House in Cracau (2007)

Cracau is a district of the independent city of Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . Measured by its 22,029 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2007), it is the fourth largest district of Krefeld. Cracau is east of the city center and is otherwise bordered by Inrath - Kliedbruch in the north, Bockum in the east and Dießem in the south. Cracau is part of the Mitte district .

history

Cracau has always been part of Krefeld. This is where Cracau Castle , built around 1400 by the Counts of Moers and razed in 1677 , was the name of the current district. The origin of the name Cracau, like the Krefeld itself, cannot be clearly determined. However, there are several theories about this. The name Cracau could be derived from the Krieewel word "Krakau", which is a kind of bird cage or aviary (chew) for crows. The name Krefeld could be traced back to "Krähenfeld". However, neither can be clearly proven.

From 1720 to 1724 the broken stone of the dismantled Cracau Castle was used to build the Cracau Castle (also called Cracauen) and in the first half of the 19th century the “High House” was made of the same material and style. From then on, the von Beckerath family lived in Cracauen and ran a silk dyeing factory there. The castle was completely destroyed in 1943, but the "high house" survived the Second World War .

Cracau today

Today's district still has a strong central character in the south-west with multi-storey buildings. In the northeast, on the other hand, there are mainly single-family houses and spacious villas . Especially in the so-called Bismarckviertel, which was built around 1900, there are a lot of town villas in the Wilhelminian style and Art Nouveau .

In Cracau is the Krefeld employment office , the former estate building of the district of Krefeld , the wholesale market and the Sprödentalplatz, which is used as an exhibition and fairground.

Cracau is crossed by several traffic axes that connect the city center with the motorway and the other eastern parts of the city. Three tram lines and several bus lines also cross the area of the district .

Others

In 2018 musician Björn Gögge named his album after the Krefeld district of Cracau , where he lived during the writing process.
