history

After the death of the childless Prince Friedrich August von Anhalt-Zerbst in 1793, the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst was divided into three roughly equal areas, which were allocated to the three principalities of Anhalt-Bernburg , Anhalt-Dessau and Anhalt-Köthen by drawing lots in 1797 . The eastern part around Coswig fell to Anhalt-Bernburg. After the unification of the Duchy of Anhalt to form the Duchy of Anhalt , the six districts of Dessau , Bernburg , Köthen , Ballenstedt , Zerbst and Coswig were formed in 1863 . The Coswig district was formed from the area that was allocated to Anhalt-Bernburg in 1797. In 1865 the Coswig district was dissolved and incorporated into the Zerbst district.
