The Amtsbanerne på Als ( ABA ) was until 1920 under the name Kreisbahn auf Alsen an own operation of the former district of Sonderburg in North Schleswig . This transferred the operational management to the railway company Lenz & Co GmbH - operating department Altona . In 1920 the district was dissolved and the area ceded to Denmark on the basis of the referendum in Schleswig provided for in the Peace Treaty of Versailles .
Meter gauge network
The meter- gauge small railway network on the island of Alsen comprised a route network totaling more than 50 kilometers in length. The kilometering of the individual routes always began in Sonderborg and was continued accordingly on the branching routes. It was built according to the Prussian Small Railroad Act of 1892, the Prussian state and the province of Schleswig-Holstein gave substantial subsidies for the construction.
Sønderborg – Skovby (Sonderburg – Schauby)
The line was opened on February 6, 1898. Originally, the route led over the city train station in Sønderborg south to the beach promenade, where the connection to the gas works branched off to the east, and further north past the castle to the city harbor. After the narrow-gauge line was closed on February 28, 1933, the section from Sonderburg to Mommark was re-gauged to 1435 mm and opened on June 15, 1933. The route within the town was relocated and led from the city station directly to Kong Christian den X's Bro , with which the Als Sund was crossed. The port railway branched off from this route. The route north of the city station was re-routed further east and met the old narrow-gauge route on the outskirts. This route was discontinued on May 27, 1962.
Lille Mommark – Mommark Færge (Klein Mummark – Mummark ferry)
The 4.3 km long section was opened to Mommark Færgegård on February 6, 1898, extended to Mommark Færge in 1923, converted to standard gauge in 1933 and remained in place until it was discontinued in 1962.
Vollerup – Nordborg (Wollerup – Norburg)
Opened July 1, 1898; 26.4 km; Adjustment on February 6, 1933.
Sønderborg harbor railway
The construction of the port railway was decided by Law No. 72 of March 29, 1924. The same law approved the construction of a combined road / rail bridge and the creation of accesses from the state railway station in Sønderborg across the bridge to the Sønderborgsiden . The 1.5 km long route was only used by freight.
The port railway was in operation through the Kong Christian den X's Bro ( German König-Christian-X.-Brücke ) until 1998 . There was a relocation pit under the bridge, in which standard-gauge wagons could be placed on narrow-gauge trolleys . This system was still needed until the gas works railway was closed. Part of the port tracks was designed as a four-rail track.
Gas works railway in Sonderburg
A siding to the east of the port railway connected the gas works . After the shutdown of the small railway, using part of the old port railway, it led along the beach promenade behind the castle and past today's city port under the Kong Christian the X's Bro to the new port railway. This meter-gauge track was in operation from 1909 to 1951. The line was used for coal transports, the traffic was taken care of by a works locomotive. The line remained meter-tracked after 1933, and locomotive 8 of the Kreisbahn was acquired for traffic.

In 1914, according to the course book (route 102 S), seven pairs of trains ran daily from Sønderborg to Schauby (Skovby) and nine to Norburg. The connection to the ferry in Mommark was only operated twice on Tuesdays and Sundays.
At that time, the vehicle fleet comprised 9 steam locomotives, 22 passenger and 107 freight cars as well as 8 post / baggage cars. In 1897 four three-axle Lenz type g locomotives were delivered by Vulcan , and by 1910 five more locomotives of this type were added. In 1913, two four-axle locomotives were acquired from Orenstein & Koppel , one of which had to be handed over to the Heeresfeldbahn in 1914 and never returned. In 1922 a three-axle locomotive was taken over by the Hadersleben circuit . In 1927 three new, more powerful machines with three driving axles and one leading and one trailing axle each were purchased from Vulcan. In 1931 there were three railcars. Most of the vehicles were scrapped in 1933, and the three-axle locomotive 8 was sold to the gas works. The locomotives 40–42 , built in 1927 , were sold to the Kolberger Kleinbahn (40) and the Greifenberger Kleinbahn . Locomotive 42 is preserved in the Greifenberg Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Poland.
After assignment to Denmark
After Alsen became Danish in 1920, the Railway Act of March 29, 1924 decided to convert the Sønderborg – Mommark line to standard gauge and then to have it operated by Danske Statsbaner . The renovation was completed on June 15, 1933. The line then existed until May 27, 1962. The remaining lines were closed on February 28, 1933.
In the international course book of DB winter 1956 eight pairs of trains are listed on weekdays and seven pairs of trains between Sønderborg H and Mommark Fg on Sundays and public holidays.
Museum train
An association has existed since 2003 that wants to rebuild part of the route between Nordborg and Danfoss Universe near Havnbjerg as a museum railway. The first trip on a small stretch of road took place on August 28, 2016.
