The Kritische Ausgabe (KA) is the only independent journal with a literary focus in the German-speaking area that is responsibly published by students . It has been published since 1997 - usually every six months - at the Institute for German Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Bonn with a print run of 400 copies.

The name of the journal recurs on the edition-philological term of the historical-critical edition , in which the attribute critical stands, among other things, for a scientific examination and evaluation of existing text certificates as well as supplementary explanations on the history of effects and material references.

The magazine has been distributed by the Berlin publisher Dreiviertelhaus since 2017.

Objectives and priorities

Since the 4th year 2000, each issue has been devoted to a particular topic, on which primarily literary and cultural studies-oriented essays , reviews , author portraits and interviews are brought together. Since then, the KA has been part of the corpus of the journals evaluated and listed in the bibliography of German linguistics and literary studies (BDSL, Eppelsheimer / Köttelwesch ).

The objective of the critical edition is on the one hand to make literary content accessible to a non-academic audience in an understandable and appealing way, on the other hand to portray contemporary German-language literature in an exemplary manner and thus "to take a mediating position between German research and the liveliness of the expanding literary industry" . It also offers students in particular the opportunity to gain journalistic and editorial experience.

Editors and authors

The authors of the critical edition are students and teachers of German and related disciplines, freelance journalists , writers and other cultural workers. So far, these have included: Katharina Born , Jan Böttcher , Martin Büsser , Ernesto Castillo , Crauss , Milo Dor , Ulrike Draesner , Dieter M. Gräf , Guy Helminger , Alban Nikolai Herbst , Adrian Kasnitz , Myriam Keil , Alexander Kluge , Jan Kuhlbrodt , Björn Kuhligk , Stan Lafleur , Thomas Lehr , Ralf Schnell , Enno Stahl , Jürgen Theobaldy , Achim Wagner , Jan Wagner , Christoph Wenzel , Ron Winkler , Mario Wirz and Uljana Wolf .

Since 2004, the editorial team has maintained an online magazine with a general columnist character, which is listed as a news source on Google News . In 2007, the questionnaire for “Germanists who made it”, which was published monthly in the online magazine at the time, was part of the Year of the Humanities . In summer 2008, the theater department of the editorial team was a cooperation partner of the international theater festival Biennale Bonn .

Since 2005, the magazine has received grants from the German Literature Fund, most recently the issue of "Underground" published at the end of 2016. In addition, she is co-initiator of the meeting of young magazines , which aims to network German-language literary magazines and which took place in Cologne for the first time in June 2007. Together with the Junge Magazines (including the magazines BELLA triste , EDIT , Krachkultur , louder nobody and SIC ), the critical edition was also represented at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the same year . Since 2007, the Critical Edition has also been regularly present at the Leipzig Book Fair with a stand, in each case jointly with the Dahlem publishing house .

Awards

On October 18, 2007, the KA editorial team was awarded the Alumni Prize of the University of Bonn as the “best student initiative”. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the magazine, an exhibition on the history of the KA was on view from November 7, 2007 to March 28, 2008 at the Institute for German Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Bonn.

Edition Critical Edition

In 2011, the magazine's friends' association launched the critical edition edition . Its aim is to publish anthologies and monographs on topics from the humanities and cultural sciences, which are designed by students, graduates and teachers of German studies and related disciplines, including: B. Master's / Master's theses, for which, in contrast to dissertations, there is no obligation to publish. The edition will appear as a separate row in Weidle Verlag Bonn. The publisher is the former KA editor-in-chief Benedikt Viertelhaus.

In 2015, the Edition published an anthology with essayistic contributions from the first 25 issues of the Critical Edition and a conversation with former and current editors-in-chief about magazine making under the title Must only dare, dare, dare! .
