The Krumbachtal in Leininger Sporn , a part of the northeastern Palatinate Forest ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a 4.5 km long V-shaped valley of the forest districts of Weisenheim am Berg and Battenberg in the district of Bad Durkheim . The eponymous Krumbach , a right tributary of the Eckbach , flows through the valley in which the Ungeheuersee lies .

The Krumbachtal is initially directed mainly from south to north, then consistently to the northeast. It winds its way between mountains that are between 415 and 360  m high. On the left, the Mittelberg ( 400.1  m ), the Harzweilerkopf ( 415  m ) and the Pickelhaube ( 360.7  m ) follow each other , on the right the Kühberg with its two peaks (398 and 393  m ) and the Büschelberg ( 361.2  m) ).

Valley course

In the area of ​​the upper valley head it rises at about 360  m above sea level. NHN the Krumbach . It flows through the Ungeheuersee about 300 m below its source , a raised bog pond classified as a natural monument , the area of ​​which reaches 0.4 hectares at the highest water level. In the further course of the valley, the Krumbach seeps into the subsoil in parts and reappears again and again. The valley drops to almost 240  m .

In the northeast, where the valley in the area of ​​the Rheingrabenbruch gradually opens to the Upper Rhine Plain , at the foot of the mountain, on which Battenberg Castle stands in the local community of the same name , it passes over into the Haardtrand - Im Baumgarten nature reserve .

A forest path leads from Battenberg through the Krumbachtal up along the stream , which is not approved for general motor vehicle traffic and is used for hiking . The Weisenheimer Hütte of the Palatinate Forest Association , which is also popularly known as the Ungeheuersee-Hütte or Palatinate Foresthütte and is open on weekends from mid-March to autumn, is slightly elevated ( 365  m ) .

The Krumbachtal can also be reached by hikers in other ways, for example from Leistadt via the Sandtal and from Weisenheim am Berg via the Vallunga . From Bobenheim am Berg you can also get to the Krumbach Valley - north around the Büschelberg. The trail markings can be checked on relevant websites.
