Kurt Ernst August Friedrich Freiherr von Manteuffel (born February 4, 1853 in Genthin , † February 26, 1922 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Kurt was a member of the baronial Saxon - Lower Lusatian line of the von Manteuffel family . His parents were Kurt Ernst von Mihlendorff Freiherr von Manteuffel (1804–1890), Prussian Privy Councilor and District Court Director in Wittenberg, and his wife Anna, née von Schönberg (1819–1855).

Military career

During the war against France on August 30, 1870, Manteuffel joined the replacement battalion of the 2nd Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 27 of the Prussian Army . On October 10, 1870, he was transferred to the mobile regiment in France, where he took part in the siege of Paris . After the preliminary peace at Versailles , Manteuffel became Portepeefähnrich on April 8, 1871 and second lieutenant on March 9, 1872 . As such, he graduated from the War Academy from October 1876 to July 1879 . In the further course of his military career Manteuffel rose to lieutenant colonel in September 1896 and was chief of the general staff of III from December 17, 1896 to March 31, 1898 . Army Corps and then became Head of Department in the General Staff . As a colonel , he acted as commander of the Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 5 from April 18, 1901, and was appointed commander of the 14th Infantry Brigade in Düsseldorf at the same time as his promotion to major general on January 27, 1903 . This was followed by a job as Lieutenant General and Commander of the 38th Division in Erfurt from January 24, 1907 . From July 7, 1909, Manteuffel was director of the War Academy and at the same time also President of the Military Study Commission. In this position he received on April 7, 1911 the character of general of the infantry. On March 31, 1913, he was put up for disposal with the statutory pension .

At the beginning of the First World War , Manteuffel was reused as a zD officer and served as chief of the deputy general staff of the army until December 29, 1914.

family

Manteuffel married Elise Hedwig von Wolff on May 12, 1886 in Magdeburg (born August 1, 1862 at Groß-Furra Castle ; † January 27, 1940 in Lübben ). She was the daughter of the President of the Audit Office of the German Empire Arthur von Wolff and Elise von Wurmb from the house of Groß-Furra. The marriage had four children:
