Là-bas ( French for 'there') is a song by the French singer and composer Jean-Jacques Goldman , which he recorded as a duet with the British singer Sirima and which was on his fifth album Entre gris clair et gris foncé . As a single released in 1987, it was number 2 on the French charts for four weeks, stayed in the charts for a total of 21 weeks and sold 593,000 copies (gold record). The title is still popular today, both in France and outside of it.

background

In 1987 the piece was finished and Goldman was looking for a female voice to finish the recording. Philippe Deletrez, a friend of Goldman's saxophonist Philippe de Lacroix-Herpin (known as Pinpin), had discovered Sirima while singing in the Paris metro and recommended Goldman to meet her. After several rehearsals in the studio, Goldman ultimately decided to record the duet with her.

Text and music

The song deals with "the desire to break out of reality and the dilemma that opens up when you have to choose between a new beginning in life and the loss of loved ones". While Goldman is about to start a more lucrative life, Sirima, who personifies "stability, roots and habit," begs him to stay with her and start a family. The piece is conceived as a dialogue that ends in two monologues in which “one is decided while the other continues to plead”.

The number was also recorded under the title Over There in order to gain popularity in the Anglo-Saxon language area. Radio Canada voted the piece the best French-language song of the year ( Meilleure Chanson Francophone de l'Année ) based on the audience vote .

In an interview, Goldman stated that he made a throwback to the chanson by using one of his lines in the On ira piece on his 1997 album En passant .

success

The song rose to number 2 in the French Top 50. It could not displace Étienne by Guesch Patti and Boys (Summertime Love) by Sabrina , who were number 1 one after the other.
