history

The first of the later member organizations , U-landshjælp fra Folk til Folk (UFF) ( development aid from people to people), was founded in 1977 in Denmark . Others followed with corresponding names in Scandinavia , as well as “Development Aid from People to People” (DAPP) in English- speaking countries and “Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo” (ADPP) in Portuguese- speaking countries. Country organizations founded in the 1980s have the term HUMANA in their name; The name 'HUMANA People to People' has been used since the 1990s. The individual country organizations are members of the Humana People to People Federation , which has had its headquarters in Zimbabwe since 1998. The Federation's headquarters have been in Geneva since 2005.

First activities were refugee aid in Mozambique, z. B. through donations in kind, and the construction of the Chindunduma school in Zimbabwe. From 1980 to 1985 the area of activity was enlarged both in Europe (to collect donations) and in Africa ( Angola , Guinea-Bissau , Mozambique , Zambia , Zimbabwe , from 1990 Namibia , 1995 Malawi , 1997 South Africa , later also Botswana ). The organization has been cooperating with the One World Center movement since 1986 . Projects were started in India in 1998 and in China in 2005 . In 1983 the “Frontline Institute” was set up as a training center for African project managers , initially in Denmark and since 1991 in Zimbabwe. Since 1980 "solidarity workers" have been sent out, voluntary development workers who have been called "Development Instructors" since 2000.

Since the mid-1980s, the shipment of used clothing, especially to Mozambique and Angola, has been expanded. The sometimes fierce criticism of it diminished after various scientific studies had shed light on the topic since the end of the 1990s, the umbrella organization FairWANY e. V., after investigations in 20 African countries, published the results of its "Dialogue Program Used Clothing in Africa" in 2005 and articles such as "Africa needs used clothing" had been published since 2009, but never stopped.

In 2009 the 34 member associations (see below) operated 328 active projects for sustainable development in 42 countries in Africa, India and China, as well as North, Central and South America and Europe. These include projects for teacher training , for orphans , against HIV / AIDS , for poverty reduction through community development (e.g. well and latrine construction) and the granting of microcredits to small groups.

Humana People to People in Germany

A used clothes container from Humana in Cologne

The non-profit association Humana People to People Germany e. V. was founded in January 2005. According to the company, the main activities are in-kind and cash donation campaigns, public relations , placement of volunteers at training and project locations and sponsorships for orphans .

The company HUMANA Kleidersammlung GmbH has been a partner of the international HUMANA People to People movement since 1988. It operates used clothes collection with clothes containers in many cities in Germany and a sorting facility in Berlin, from which the dispatch to ADPP Mozambique takes place (Link see below: Associaçāo de desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo - Association for Development Aid from People to People). The Supervision and Service Directorate ("ADD") of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate had banned the collection of used clothes in Rhineland-Palatinate with a final collection ban on March 4, 2009. HUMANA Kleidersammlungs GmbH Berlin is prohibited from using three world spheres to create the impression of "supporting a good cause". The prohibition on collecting was justified by the fact that the company was not prepared to disclose the use of the clothing donations and the proceeds from their exploitation, among other things in HUMANA Second-Hand-Kleid GmbH, and a largely charitable use of the shoes and clothing donations could not be proven. Non-profit commercial collections without depictions of the three worlds are not affected by this ban.

Member organizations

criticism

As an alleged part of Tvind , the organization is not without controversy. The organizational structure is partially opaque. In addition, the association is accused of mixing commercial and development goals.

Former volunteers accuse the organization of using volunteers as interns e.g. B. exploiting in Germany or Great Britain as regular but unpaid workers, on the other hand, abroad, especially in Africa, not to provide meaningful development aid. Former employees of an AIDS project in Zambia report that no money came from Germany for 6 months, but that money had to be earned locally from clothing sales. According to a self-assessment by the German association, only 57,000 euros were transferred from Germany to Africa in 2004.

The BMZ has not been included in 2009 the organization the only one in the new "Weltwärts program" to promote international use of volunteers. Burkhard Wilke from the DZI describes Humana as "non-transparent and implausible".

General criticism of the used clothing trade:

When the import of used clothing started on a large scale about ten years ago, it had a devastating effect on the African textile industry, and numerous factories have closed since then. "

- Neil Kearney, ITGLWF International Textile Workers Union
