The L'Atalante is a research ship from the French research institute Ifremer . It is managed by Genavir.

history

The ship was built under the hull number 278 at the Ateliers & Chantiers du Havre shipyard in Le Havre and was completed on September 20, 1990 of that year. It entered service in October 1990, and it undertook its first research trip in March 1991.

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . Propulsion for the two are electric motors of the manufacturer Jeumont Schneider , each with 1,000  kW power available. The motors act on two fixed propellers equipped with Becker rudders . The ship also has a Schottel rudder propeller in the bow . The ship reaches a speed of 14.5  knots .

The power of the drive machines is generated by three diesel engines with an output of 1000 kW each. Three generators are available for the power supply on board . Two generators with 1256 kW output (1570  kVA apparent power ) or 360 kW output (450 kVA apparent power) are driven by the main engine. Another generator has an output of 240 kW (apparent power: 300 kVA).

The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice .

Furnishing

The ship is equipped with various systems required for the research work, including echo sounders , sonar , thermosalinograph and bathythermograph . From the research ship u. a. the deep-sea submarineNautile ” and the remote-controlled submersible vehicleVictor 6000 ” can be used. The ship is equipped with a dynamic positioning system.

Several rooms are available for research, including eight laboratories and other scientific rooms. There are eight spaces for 20-foot containers on board .

The ship has several cranes, including a crane located on the port side on the aft deck and a crane system approximately amidships on the starboard side. Further cranes are located on the aft deck and on the foredeck . There is a stern boom at the stern of the ship . There are also various winches on deck .

In addition to the crew, there is space on board for 30 scientists and other personnel required for research trips.
