The Lago d'Ampola also Laghetto d'Ampola is a lake in the Garda mountains in Trentino . It is located about 2 km southwest of Tiarno di Sopra at the beginning of the Val d'Ampola, as the southwestern valley of the Ledro valley that slopes down to the Chiese is called. Lake Ampola has been a nature reserve since 1990 and has been part of the NATURA 2000 network since 1996 .

Origin and geography

The approximately 400 m long and 150 m wide lake is located at an altitude of 725  m slm on the watershed between Chiese in the west and Lake Garda in the east. Wherein m, on average, only 1.3 parts of deep sea is in a flat bog surrounded and is prone to silting . Due to the heavy vegetation, it looks more like a pond than a lake.

The Ampola lake is of glacial origin and after the last glacial period formed a single lake area with the Ledro lake, which filled the Ledro valley from Molina di Ledro to the Ampola pass. The lake bed was carved out by a branch of the Adige Glacier , in which water accumulated , aided by the remains of moraine at the eastern end at Molina di Ledro and the alluvial cone of the Rio Visi at the western end. The flowing waters coming from the side valleys of the Ledro valley eventually led to the siltation of the original continuous lake bed through sedimentation and separated the two lakes.

Fish fauna

The following types of fish can be found in Lago d'Ampola: minnow , European eel , perch , pike , carp , rudd and tench .

Others

During canal work in 1967, the remains of an approximately 3500 year old dugout canoe were found near the lake , similar to the dugout canoes found at the pile dwelling settlement on Lake Ledro.
