The Ledrosee ( Italian Lake Ledro ) is a mountain lake in the Lake Garda mountains in Trentino .

Origin and geography

The Lago di Ledro lies at 655  m slm between Lake Garda and Lake Idro at the eastern end of the Valle di Ledro . The lake has an area of 2.187 km². The deepest point is 47 m below the water surface.

The Ledro lake is of glacial origin and after the last glacial period formed a single lake area with the Lago d'Ampola at the southwestern end of the valley, which covered the Ledro valley from Molina di Ledro to the Ampola pass. The lake bed was carved out by a branch of the Adige Glacier , in which water could collect , aided by the remains of moraine at the eastern end at Molina di Ledro and by alluvial cones of the Rio Visi at the western end. The flowing waters coming from the side valleys of the Ledro valley eventually led to the siltation of the original continuous lake bed through sedimentation and separated the two lakes.

Places by the lake

There are three places on Lake Ledro that are characterized by agriculture and tourism:

The places mentioned are fractions of the community ( comune ) Ledro founded on January 1, 2010 .

Fish fauna

The following fish species can be found in Lake Ledro: Alosa agone (a species from the genus Alosa ), eel , Alburnus arborella (a species from the genus Alburnus ), brown trout , Dalmatian dwarf chub (a species from the genus Rutilus ), chub , river perch , common sunfish , Hecht , crucian carp , carp , monkfish , Barn and Telestes souffia muticellus (a subspecies of Strömers ).

Lake Ledro hydropower plant

The water of Lake Ledro has been used to generate electricity since 1928. The water with the aid of a 6-kilometer tunnel through the Monte Oro in the nearly 600 meters below is of Giancarlo Maroni designed storage power plant according to Riva del Garda passed. In order not to damage the tourism on Lake Ledro through the withdrawal of water, the water is only discharged in winter and pumped back to Lake Ledro in summer. The water level of Lake Ledros fluctuates between 1 and 1.5 meters. The power plant has been modernized and expanded several times, most recently in 1999. The total output generated is 133 gigawatt hours per year.

Archaeological finds

Lake Ledro became famous through an archaeological discovery. When the water level sank in 1929 after the power station in Riva del Garda went into operation, piles were discovered that had been driven into the lake bed, which later turned out to be the remains of pile dwellings from the Bronze Age , which had been built around 4,000 years ago. Because of the chaos of war and the subsequent economic crisis, archaeological research could not be continued until 1957. Many of the finds had fallen into the hands of black graves who had operated a lucrative trade with them. What was left can be viewed today in the pile dwelling museum ( Museo delle Palafitte ) in Molina di Ledro. Here are u. a. a dugout canoe approx. 4.50 m long and 75 cm wide , a model of the staked section of the lake and lifelike stilt houses.

On an area of 4,000 m², around 15,000 piles formed the basis for a village in the lake, to protect against wild animals and to optimize fishing.

As in neighboring Fiavé , the stilt houses on Lake Ledro have been part of the Unesco World Heritage since 2011 .

tourism

Since the 1980s, the lake and the surrounding places have been developed for tourism and serve tourists as a holiday and excursion destination. Numerous hotels, holiday apartments and holiday homes are offered as accommodation.
