The Lahad Datu District is an administrative district in the Malaysian state of Sabah . The administrative seat is the city of Lahad Datu . The district is part of the Tawau Division area to which the Kunak , Lahad Datu, Semporna and Tawau districts belong. The city is located in the east of Sabah, Malaysia on the north side of Darvel Bay .

Demographics

The population of the district is 199,830 people according to the last census. As in many other districts of Sabah, there are significant numbers of illegal immigrants from the nearby Philippines , especially from Sulu and Mindanao , who are not recorded in the population statistics. Lahad Datu is home to a significant number of Bajau and Malays from the Cocos Islands who settled here in the 1950s when the Cocos Islands became part of Australia .
