The area around Papar is characterized by low-lying coastal areas that extend inland to the Crocker Ranges. Traditionally this area is very suitable for growing rice and the flat open rice fields probably gave the area its name. Despite the growing urbanization of Kota Kinabalus , 40 kilometers to the north, the Papar district is still dominated by rice fields and orchards. Papar is therefore also called the "rice bowl of Sabah".
