history
In 1853, the then- Minnesota Territory Parliament decided to establish a number of new counties along the Minnesota River.
In the course of this, today's Le Sueur County was created. The main settlement areas of the new county were on the Minnesota River and most of the cities within the county that still exist today were founded in the 1850s, while the geographic center remained very sparsely populated.
The seat of the county administration was initially Le Sueur, the then largest and eponymous city within the county boundaries. Since this city was on the northwestern edge of the county, however, it was considered to position the county seat more centrally.
A group of business people bought land in the geographic center of the county and built a two-story building that could be used for county administration. A referendum in 1876 then decided in favor of the new county seat.
