Le Vieil-Baugé

Le Vieil-Baugé (German: the old Baugé, Alt-Baugé) is a village and a commune déléguée in the French commune of Baugé-en-Anjou with 1,231 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Maine-et-Loire department in the region Pays de la Loire .

geography

Le Vieil-Baugé is located on the Couasnon , two kilometers south of the former canton capital Baugé , which is now also incorporated into Baugé-en-Anjoun.

history

The place was originally called Balgiaco. Many traces of Gallo-Roman life have been found. In the 5th century, Vieil-Baugé was a main town in Anjou . When in 999 the Lords of Saumur built a defensive fort in a strategic place, around which a settlement gradually developed, which was called Baugé, Balgiaco gradually became Vieil-Baugé. On March 22, 1421, the Battle of Baugé took place here, in which a Scottish-French force led by John Stewart was able to defeat the attacking English under Thomas of Lancaster , after they failed to cross the river crossings to Vieil, which were defended by Scottish archers -Baugé to overcome. 1,054 English fighters - including the military leader - are said to have died. The partnership between the town of Baugé and Milngavie in Scotland is still a reminder of the events of that time.

There was some viticulture in the 17th and 18th centuries, which later gradually disappeared.

Since January 1, 2013, Le Vieil-Baugé has been part of the newly created municipality of Baugé-en-Anjou. On this date, the municipalities of Saint-Martin-d'Arcé , Pontigné , Montpollin , Baugé and Le Vieil-Baugé were merged into a Commune nouvelle . After the merger, Le Vieil-Baugé will form a Commune déléguée in this association.

economy

A specialty is the restoration of historical carpets.

Attractions

The Romanesque church of St-Symphorien from the 11th century is a specialty due to its twisted spire. Similar church towers can be found in four other places in the Baugeois . However, this is 1.47 meters off the perpendicular .

A traditional wash house ( lavoir ) with its own spring is still preserved.

Leisure and Tourism

Some accommodation options, especially gîtes rurales , are available. The typical boules game of the area, the boule de fort , is played a lot.
