history

The addition of the name Arcé refers to the old French arseis and thus to the reclamation of the land by clearing and burning. It was first mentioned in 1095 when Abbot Girard of the St. Nicolas Monastery in Angers donated the Church of St-Martin. Little by little, about 300 hectares were added to the district until the 19th century. Later, the sale of these lands made it possible to finance public facilities and residential buildings.

Since January 1, 2013, Saint-Martin-d'Arcé has been part of the newly created municipality of Baugé-en-Anjou. On this date, the municipalities of Saint-Martin-d'Arcé, Pontigné , Montpollin , Baugé and Le Vieil-Baugé were merged into a Commune nouvelle . After the merger, Saint-Martin-d'Arcé will form a Commune déléguée in this association.
