The Legendary Tigerman
The Legendary Tigerman , actually Paulo Furtado (born September 1970 in Portuguese East Africa ) is a Portuguese singer and musician.
Life
As a toddler he came with his parents from the Portuguese colony of Mozambique to Coimbra , where he grew up. In 1989 he founded the psychobilly / post-punk band Tédio Boys with friends in Coimbra . After some tours and releases in Portugal and the USA , the band split up in 2000. At that time Furtado had already founded the soul / rock band WrayGunn , whose activities are now intensifying. A little later, Furtado began performing as a one-man orchestra , under the name The Legendary Tigerman.
In 2002 his debut album, Naked Blues was released . Lyrically and musically, the aesthetics of the Delta Blues and also of the cinema were formative, also with the artwork and the appearance of the Tiger Man. In 2004, for example, the remix CD In Cold Blood was published in a book with photos from Furtado and various models that showed images based on different film genres. His 2006 album Masquerade was released on CD with a bonus DVD, which included clips from various directors (including Edgar Pêra ) and a short film by himself. In 2007 he was responsible for the music for the film Tebas by director Rodrigo Areias , and in 2008 he had a guest appearance in Werner Schroeter's award-winning film Nuit de chien ("This Night").
After a tour with Jarvis Cocker , the album Femina was released in 2009 in a special edition with a bonus DVD. It contained clips for some of the songs, shot by Furtado himself, plus a clip by Rodrigo Areias, and a documentation for the album. The album title refers to the predominant theme of women and the guest singers invited in this context, including Maria de Medeiros , Peaches , Asia Argento , Rita Redshoes , the Bellrays singer Lisa Kerkaula and the Nouvelle Vague singer Phoebee Killdeer. The album reached the top 5 and also made Furtado known to a wider audience in Portugal.
Despite his increased public awareness in Portugal, he continues to musically seek the closeness of the underground bands who dedicate themselves to the blues, soul and rock 'n' roll in their own varieties, for example at joint concerts with The Jim Jones Revue and The Bellrays in the Parisian Bataclan , or with the Dead Combo . In the same style he designed his appearances at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan and the Montreal Jazz Festival , and caused a sensation with the audience.
He also cultivated his relationship to film. For example, he wrote the music for Rodrigo Areias' western Estrada de Palha (“Straße aus Stroh”, 2012) with Rita Redshoes, and they both accompanied the film live on a premiere tour. And at his concerts he often shows clips and short films at the same time. A special atmosphere is created that brings the cinema and rock concert closer together. The contrast between the sporadically built-in electronic instrumentation and the prevailing, archaic Delta-Blues are an additional characteristic of Furtado's music.
In the spring of 2014, the legendary Tigerman released his album True . It debuted at number one on the Portuguese album charts.
