Rita Redshoes (* 10. July 1981 in Loures as Rita Pereira ) is a Portuguese singer .

Career

As a teenager she was a drummer in a theater group and played in various projects before recording an album in 2000 with her alternative rock band Atomic Bees, founded in 1997 . The former Silence 4 head David Fonseca took her on as a keyboard player in his backing band in 2003. With him she sang Hold Still from his number 1 album Our Hearts Will Beat As One . While touring with Fonseca, she wrote her own pieces. The self-produced song Dream on girl appeared on the Novos Talentos double CD 2007, with which the Fnac chain presents new talent every year.

In 2008 her debut album, Golden Era, was released . Most of the 13 self-written pieces she recorded herself, she co-produced the album, and the artwork she helped design contained allusions to the teenage music and entertainment industry of the 1950s. The idiosyncratic mix of their atmospheric music from u. a. Pop , Country , Easy Listening , or even Southern Soul , their lyrics sung in accent-free American English and their undertones in the predominant love theme, reminiscent of the music of Lee Hazlewood , Fiona Apple , Cat Powers or the early Goldfrapp . The album debuted at number 9 on the charts, where it stayed for a total of 13 weeks. As a result she gave numerous concerts and opened the Portuguese guest performances of bands such as Shout Out Louds or Keane . Since 2009 she has also performed internationally, for example at the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen and at the SXSW / South by Southwest Festival in Austin (Texas) . In the same year, Golden Era achieved gold status in Portugal.

The musician The Legendary Tigerman invited her in 2009 as a guest musician for his chart album Femina . This was followed by other joint recordings and appearances, for example at the Lisbon horror film festival MOTELx , where they composed and performed accompanying music for the silent film A Dança dos Paroxismos (“Dance of the fits”, 1929) by director Jorge Brum do Canto .

In November 2009 Golden Era was released in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark before their second album with 14 new tracks came out in the summer of 2010. Lights & Darks appeared in a partial edition with a DVD with 13 short films by various directors (including herself) about their songs, and entered the charts at number 2. A number of guest musicians can be heard on the album, including a. The Legendary Tigerman and José Pino, a Beat & R´n´R guitarist of the 1960s.

Rita Redshoes was invited by the band Snow Patrol as a guest singer for her performance at Rock in Rio 2010, and she has performed at festivals such as the Swedish Peace & Love and the Portuguese Super Bock Super Rock . She went on tour with the Legendary Tigerman for his Femina album, sang duets and wrote the music for a play with him. They received an award at the Caminhos do Cinema Português film festival for their joint soundtrack to the Western Estrada de Palha (“Street of Straw”) by Rodrigo Areias . In 2011 her Lights & Darks album was released with a DVD, on which a documentary about her could be seen alongside various other videos, with pictures of her album recordings, private recordings, interviews and the like. a.

Rita Redshoes studied classical music and psychology. In addition to her trained, characteristic voice, the changing effects of her external appearance and her unobtrusive demeanor are a characteristic of Rita Redshoes. In choosing her stage name in 2007, she was inspired by the Wizard of Oz and David Bowie's hit song Let's Dance .
