history
In 1939 the airport was created by the Luftwaffe as a military airfield in preparation for the attack on Poland . After the surrender of the Wehrmacht on May 5, 1945 , the airfield was briefly used by the first Czechoslovak air division . After that, flight operations were stopped and the land was used again for agriculture .
In 1956 , construction began on a new airport on the same piece of land. With this the military use had the highest priority from the beginning. Civil operation officially began on 16 October 1959 with the landing of a Tupolev Tu-104 A of ČSA . At the same time, flight operations at Ostrava-Hrabůvka Airport were discontinued because it was in an unfavorable location in the middle of the city's agglomeration . At the new airport there were mainly flights within Czechoslovakia, international flights were the exception. There was also an aero taxi service in the 60s and 70s.
It has been used as a passenger and cargo airport since 1989. In 1993 the military section was closed and responsibility passed to the state airport administration. On July 1, 2004 responsibility was transferred to the Moravian-Silesian Region and the joint stock company Letiště Ostrava a. s. was founded, which has been operating since then. In 2006 the airport previously called Ostrava-Mošnov International Airport was dedicated to the composer Leoš Janáček . In the same year, a new handling terminal was opened.
Due to its distance from the urban agglomeration of Ostrava, there is neither a night flight ban nor other noise restrictions. The airport is open 24 hours a year from June 1 to September 30, and from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the rest of the year. The airport is suitable for all weather conditions according to ILS CAT II / III .
Since 2003, the airport has hosted the annual NATO Days in Ostrava and the Air Force Days of the Czech Republic, which have been held in parallel since 2010 .
In 2014 the airport received a railway connection via the newly built Sedlnice – Mošnov railway line .
Airlines and Destinations
Currently, only Ryanair operates regular scheduled connections, there are flights to Bergamo and London-Stansted . In addition, there are seasonal flights to holiday destinations, especially on the Mediterranean . Star Alliance member LOT Polish Airlines is continuing to grow and will add the city of Ostrava to its flight schedule from March 30, 2020.
