Leo Pallwein-Prettner (born July 5, 1937 in Vienna ; † November 26, 2012 in Kirchschlag near Linz ) was an Austrian school educator , politician and from 1998 to 2011 President of the Upper Austrian Red Cross .

Life

Leo Pallwein-Prettner grew up as the son of a notary and a teacher in Unterweißbach and graduated from secondary school in Freistadt in 1955 . After his military service , he attended the Army NCOs Academy in Enns , then the Episcopal Teachers' Training College in Linz , which he graduated with honors. He married in 1967 and had two sons and three daughters. He was an honorary citizen of the communities of Kirchschlag bei Linz and Unterweissenbach .

Professional activities

Leo Pallwein-Prettner practiced his profession as a primary school teacher from 1959 in the Freistadt district and was primary school director in Kaindorf from 1963 to 1972 , then until 1978 in Kirchschlag near Linz , where he set up his residence with his family. During these years he worked for four periods in the local council and council of the communities Haibach and Kirchschlag, also in the staff representation of the teachers in the Urfahr area as well as in the function of chairman of the ÖAAB workers' and salaried union and from 1969 also as reserve officer of the Austrian Federal army in the function of commander of a border guard company .

On October 29, 1979, Pallwein-Prettner switched to state politics as a member of the state parliament . He was deputy chairman in the committee for public welfare and chairman of the finance committee and also area spokesman for the ÖVP for elderly and elderly care, people with disabilities, health, environmental medicine and rescue services as well as security and national defense. From March 1995 the politician was President of the National Defense Society. In 1995 he was appointed high school councilor. At the end of the legislative period, he left politics in 1997.

Activities in the Austrian Red Cross

On January 10, 1975, he was elected as the head of the Red Cross branch in Kirchschlag and in 1980 he was promoted to the Red Cross department commander. One year later, he was elected Vice President of the Red Cross regional organization in Upper Austria and on June 9, 1998 he was elected President of the Red Cross (as the successor to Franz Starzer). From September 2009 he was also Vice President of the Presidium of the Austrian Red Cross and was appointed by the state government as a consultant for social affairs.

On November 15, 2011, he resigned from his position as President of the Upper Austrian Red Cross, and was succeeded by the long-time Vice President Walter Aichinger . At the same time, Leo Pallwein-Prettner became Honorary President of the OÖRK and was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria from Federal Minister of Health Alois Stöger . In spring 2012 he also resigned as Vice President of the Austrian Red Cross .
