Les Veys is a commune Déléguée in the French community Carentan-les-Marais with 443 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .
geography
The place is about 25 kilometers north of Saint-Lô , on the Cotentin peninsula , on the border with the neighboring Calvados department and the Bessin landscape . It bordered to the north with the Baie des Veys , which is itself part of the larger Baie de Seine , on the English Channel . Neighboring communities were:
- Osmanville in the northeast (Dép. Calvados),
- Isigny-sur-Mer in the southeast (Dép. Calvados),
- Montmartin-en-Graignes to the south
- Saint-Pellerin in the southwest,
- Catz to the west and
- Brévands in the north-west.
The capital of the municipality of Les Veys was L'Église and is located in a central location, around four kilometers from the coast. The municipality was located in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park . The park administration (Maison du parc) is also located in the former municipality.
The northern part of the municipality consisted of numerous polders . The river Vire ran along the eastern border of the municipality and the Ruisseau du Moulin Poisson brook to the south . In addition, the municipality is traversed by the Flet river.
Toponymy
Les Veys derives from the Latin vadum ( dt. Ford frs. Gué nrm. VE).
history
In 1837, Beuzeville-sur-le-Vey and Auville-sur-le-Vey were merged. Les Veys was located between the beaches Utah Beach and Omaha Beach , where the Second World War, the invasion took place the Allied troops. Les Veys was incorporated into Carentan-les-Marais on January 1, 2017. It belonged to the Arrondissement of Saint-Lô and the canton of Carentan and was a member of the Communauté de communes de la Baie du Cotentin .
