Leslie Samuel Phillips , CBE (born April 20, 1924 in Tottenham , London ) is a British actor .

life and career

Leslie Phillips began acting training at the Italia Conti School as a child and also worked as a child actor in several stage productions. In 1938 he made his feature film debut in the comedy Lassie from Lancashire . After the outbreak of World War II , Phillips did four years of military service in an infantry division. Upon his return, he resumed his acting career. Initially, his appearances in film and theater were limited to supporting roles, including 1957 alongside Margaret Rutherford in the comedies The Smallest Show in the World and A Sparrow in Hand and in the same year alongside Gene Kelly in the musical Die Girls . His career only got a boost when he was in his mid-thirties: in 1958 he took on a role in the radio comedy Navy Lark alongside well-known comedians like Jon Pertwee . This broadcast on the BBC made Phillips known to a wide audience. Until 1977 he worked regularly with Navy Lark despite all other commitments .

In the following years, Phillips played leading roles, often charming or snobbish bon vivants and self-deprecating Don Juans. In 1959 he played alongside Ted Ray in Die liebestolle Familie , a comedy by British director Gerald Thomas , from which a fruitful collaboration should develop. From the same he got one of the leading roles in 41 Grad Liebe ( Carry on Nurse ), the second film in the Carry-on… film series . A total of five more times Phillips was to be in front of the camera under the direction of Thomas with the same team: in Ist ja crazy - Lauter lovable teachers ( Carry on Teacher ) and Ist ja crazy - These strict cops ( Carry on Constable ) as well as the related Ist ja crazy - our torpedo is coming back and scandal at Wigmore Hall . In 1960 he was led by Gerald Thomas' brother Ralph as a replacement for Dirk Bogarde leading actor from the fourth film of his Doctor film series based on the novels by Richard Gordon . In contrast to Bogarde, Phillips did not impersonate the Dr. Sparrow , but twice the Dr. Burke ( love three times a day and a stowaway has a hard time ) and Dr. Gaston Grimsdyke ( help, she doesn't love me! ). In all three films he was James Robertson Justice as chief physician Dr. Lancelot Spratt aside. Together with Robertson Justice as a charmer or grumpy dignitary, Phillips shot a total of twelve comedies. He also played in international productions such as the war films Hill of Terror (with Robert Mitchum ) and The Longest Day (with an international star cast), alongside Edouardo de Filippo in the Italian comedy Ferdinand - King of Naples and the drama Morocco 7 (with Gene Barry and Denholm Elliott ).

In the 1970s, Phillips' film appearances became rarer, and it wasn't until the mid- 80s that he was seen more often on the big screen again - no longer as a lover, but in character roles. He starred alongside Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in Out of Africa , alongside John Malkovich in Steven Spielberg's Realm of the Sun , alongside John Goodman in the comedy King Ralph , alongside Anthony Hopkins in the drama August , alongside Bruce Willis and Richard Gere in the thriller The Jackal and as Angelina Jolie 's fatherly friend in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . In 1992 he appeared in the Carry-on ... revival film Mach's again, Columbus ( Carry on Columbus ) as Ferdinand von Aragon and in 1996 he took over the role of Scotland for three Edgar Wallace productions by RTL , succeeding the late Siegfried Schürenberg Yard Chief Inspector Sir John Archibald . In addition, Phillips played in numerous television series and TV productions such as in a 1996 film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Ghost of Canterville with Neve Campbell and Patrick Stewart in the title role. He also lent his voice to the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films . For his portrayal in Venus , he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2007 British Academy Film Awards .

In 1997 Leslie Phillips was honored with a special prize at the Evening Standard British Film Awards for his services to the arts , and in the winter of 1998, for the same reasons, was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Elizabeth II and in 2008 Commander. Phillips was married to British colleague Angela Scoular for the second time since 1982 . She took her own life on April 11, 2011 at the age of 65. His first marriage to Penelope Bartley, who died in 1982, has four children. He married again on December 20, 2013.
