Read We Forget: The Best Of ( English for " So that we may never forget: The best of ") is a greatest hits album by the American rock band Marilyn Manson . It was released on September 28, 2004 on the Interscope Records label .

Most of the songs on the album are previously released singles from the five studio albums published by the band Portrait of an American Family (two songs), Antichrist Superstar (three tracks), Mechanical Animals (two pieces), Holy Wood ( four tracks) and The Golden Age of Grotesque (three and four songs respectively). Also included are the track Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) released on the EP Smells Like Children and the track Long Hard Road Out of Hell , which is part of the soundtrack of the film Spawn . Only the cover song Personal Jesus , released as a single, was previously unreleased.

The songs on the album were produced by music producers Sean Beavan, Michael Beinhorn , Ben Grosse, Dave Ogilvie, Trent Reznor and Dave Sardy, and Marylin Manson members Marilyn Manson and Tim Skold .

Cover design

The album cover is a painted picture of Marilyn Manson's pale, make-up face with two horns. On the right there are the black lettering Lest We Forget and The Best Of as well as the MM logo of the band. The background is kept white.

Lest We Forget: The Best Of entered the German album charts at number 4 on October 11, 2004 and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 13 weeks. The album also reached the Top 10 in Austria, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, New Zealand and Sweden, among others.

On September 21, 2004, the only previously unreleased song Personal Jesus was released as a single , reached number 11 in the German charts and stayed in the top 100 for nine weeks.

Sales figures and awards

In 2005, Lest We Forget: The Best Of received a gold record for more than 100,000 units sold in Germany and over 500,000 units in the United States . In the UK, the album was certified platinum for more than 300,000 copies sold in 2017.
