Leto (Russian: Лето, meaning: summer ) is a Russian film by Kirill Serebrennikow about the Soviet rock musician Viktor Zoi and his band Kino . Leto celebrated its premiere on May 9, 2018 as part of the international competition of the Cannes International Film Festival and was released in German cinemas on November 8, 2018.

action

The film is set in Leningrad in the early 1980s . It is about the relationship between 19-year-old Wiktor Zoi, 26-year-old Mike Naumenko and his wife Natascha. Driven by the music of David Bowie , Lou Reed , Iggy Pop , T. Rex , Talking Heads and Blondie , they paved the way for rock music in Russia . The biography of the Soviet rock pioneer Viktor Zoi served loosely as inspiration for the plot .

background

Russian director Kirill Serebrennikow was arrested on August 22nd in St. Petersburg while filming Leto , so he had to finish the film under house arrest . He is accused of embezzling around 68 million rubles between 2011 and 2014 . The arrest sparked outrage around the world. More than 54,000 supporters joined the Petition Freedom for Kirill Serebrennikov , including Cate Blanchett , Lars Eidinger , Volker Schlöndorff and Maren Ade . Before the opening of the 71st Cannes International Film Festival , festival director Thierry Frémaux turned to French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian , who wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin who advocated Serebrennikov's appearance in Cannes , but without success. The process started on October 17, 2018, and the first public hearing is scheduled for October 25.

The Korean actor Teo Yoo , who was born in Cologne , played the main role, although he does not speak Russian and has never been to Russia before.

reception

Reviews

The majority of the press received the film positively.

Hannah Pilarczyk from Spiegel Online praises in her review: “The imagery that Serebrennikow creates, full of cuts, countercuts and even animations make no sense in the film, but in pop and the aesthetics of the music video developed from it . One can hardly express the literal creative power of pop more strongly, which is why Leto is a universal film about pop despite its very specific setting and character ensemble. "

Even if the film is too apolitical for Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel , he praises its lightness, "in which a subliminal sentimentality resonates just as much as the impetuous energy of punk."

Daniel Kothenschulte from the Berliner Zeitung thinks that Leto's quality has suffered under Serebrennikov's house arrest and that the film "seems likable, but not really successful."

Maja Ellmenreich from Deutschlandfunk sees a great film in Leto , which "tells in captivating black-and-white images of the spirit of optimism of a whole generation that seems to be bursting with anger and passion and - still nameless - longs for Gorbachev's perestroika policy."
