action

Hellen Landgraf is the daughter of the tobacco plantation owner Arthur and they live and work together on Java. During an accident in which Hellen and a girl were involved, Hellen met the police officer Hans Jakob Braun. He is originally a Jewish banker who fled Germany during the Nazi regime with his wife Friedl, who is addicted to opium and depressed.

Hellen has developed feelings for Hans and falls in love with him, which he does not reciprocate at first and does not want to get involved in an affair with her. Hans' wife are Indonesian debt collectors on their heels, so the two flee and Hellen comes to their aid. Arthur is seriously ill and his health is deteriorating. During this time, Hellen's brother Conrad arrives with his wife Ilse and they want to take over the business on the plantation. Shortly after their arrival, the war breaks out and everything changes, because the Germans and Dutch become enemies. Conrad and his wife are staunch Nazis and it fits them very well into the concept of the plantation takeover. Hellen is urged by her father to marry the colonial administrator Joop van Boven, because he is Dutch and can protect her. During the engagement party, to which Hellen reluctantly gets involved, the plantation is set on fire by rebels and her father dies.

Even before the father's funeral, there was another argument among the siblings. After the funeral, Hellen takes over tobacco production in the plantations. In doing so, she repeatedly clashes with her brother, who wants to pursue a different company policy and diverts money from the company for private matters. Conrad registers claims from his father's will and is not squeamish about it. Hellen fights for the plantation on all fronts and still stands between Hans and Joop with her feelings. Together with Joop, she manages to maintain the plantation in the chaos of war. Thanks to Hans' help, she gets an urgent loan that helps her a lot to run the plantation and to pay the inheritance taxes.

When the Japanese enter World War II, it becomes dangerous for Hellen, Hans and Joop too, because Java is occupied by them and Hellen's plantation is expropriated. Meanwhile, Conrad, who is used by the Japanese as administrator, and his wife spread out in their parents' villa. The housekeeper Emmy helps them wherever she can and spies on Hellen the whole time and looks for the mother's will, which was blown away by a draft through Ilse's carelessness without anyone being able to read it.

When the war is over, Conrad, Ilse and Emmy want to flee. During the escape, Conrad falls down the stairs and is instantly dead. Emmy cries for him, but Ilse simply lets him lie there, ice cold as she is. Hellen and Hans return to the plantation. Hans tells Hellen that he has to go back to Germany to take care of his father's bank. That displeases Hellen and she never wants to have anything to do with him again. After a few years, Hans returned to Java and announced to Hellen that he would stay with her forever.
