The Liro is a 27 km long river in the Italian province of Sondrio in the north of Lombardy . It rises at the Splügenpass , flows through the Val San Giacomo to the south and flows into the Mera from the right at Chiavenna . The river represents the border between the western and eastern Alps along its entire length .

On its right side is the Tambo and on the left the Platta group .

On the course of the Liro, three reservoirs were built in the 1950s , the Lago di Montespluga 1900  m slm , the Lago di Isola 1260  m slm and the Lago di Prestone 1900  m slm

Liro at San Giacomo Filippo

The Liro rises at around 2415  m slm directly below Lago Azzurro on the northern slope of Pizzo della Casa around 300 meters south of the border with Switzerland in the municipality of Madesimo .

After around one kilometer to the west, it reaches the bottom of the valley at Alp Cerfui a little below the Splügen Pass and now flows further south. It crosses under the pass road and at the same time takes in from the right the Torrente Valle dei Laghetti , which is about the same size , which rises at Piz Tamborello . The still small stream flows through the Montespluga fraction and flows into the Lago di Montespluga reservoir at the foot of Monte Cardine , into which the somewhat larger Torrente Val Loga also flows.

It leaves the reservoir near Stuetta and immediately afterwards crosses the gorge-like Valle del Cardinello to the southwest. The Liro reached the tree line and takes from the right Torrente Valle Schisarolo , performs the most more water. Here he turns to the southeast and reaches the Val San Giacomo. The Liro passes the Alpine settlements of Rasdeglia , Torni , Mottaletta and Ca ′ di Goss , before flowing into the Lago di Isola reservoir from the right at the Isola fraction at the confluence of the stream from the Febbraro Valley .

At the Pianazzo fraction, it leaves the reservoir and crosses the municipal boundary to Campodolcino , after which it also includes the Scalcoggia from the left , which overcomes the Cascata di Pianazzo just before the mouth . It reaches the fractions of Corti and Tini , where it is channeled on the right side of the valley and takes in the Rabbiosa from the left . A small reservoir follows between Pietra and Prestone , after which it flows on in the municipality of San Giacomo Filippo .

It passes Vho and the fractions of Cimagande , Lirone and Gallivaggio , followed by the Alpine settlements of Campaggio , Mescolana and Vignola . At Motta San Guglielmo above the village of San Giacomo Filippo, the water from the Valle del Drogo flows into the Liro from the right . Below the village, he crosses the municipal boundary to Mese . The border to Chiavenna now runs a little further along the left bank .

At San Mamete he enters Valchiavenna and crosses the road connecting Mese and Chiavenna. The Liro finally flows into the Mera from the right at 285  m slm opposite Prata Camportaccio .

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the Liro measures 192.35 square kilometers. On the southern slope of Pizzo Tambo (Tambohorn) it reaches a height of 3262  m slm , while the lowest point at the mouth is 285  m slm .
