List of dikes in East Frisia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list includes the land reclamation measures in East Friesland through dikes and the year of land reclamation.

The diked new land is called Polder in western East Frisia and Groden in eastern East Frisia . The list is structured according to the former large bays and the islands of Norderney and Langeoog , on which dikes were also made. In addition, extensive land reclamation measures were taken in what is now the area of the city of Emden .

The dikes made the Harlebucht , the Bay of Campen and the Bay of Sielmönken "disappear" completely from the map. The dike measures on the Leybucht and the Dollart only made these bays smaller. Plans made as early as the 1950s to completely dike the Leybucht were later discarded for nature conservation reasons. The urban area of Emden was also significantly enlarged by dikes.
