List of communities in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel
The list of municipalities in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel gives an overview of the 13 smallest administrative units in the district. These are three cities, two Hanseatic cities , two towns and six municipalities.
The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is located in the northwest of the state of Saxony-Anhalt . It was formed in the course of the district reform in 1994 from the district of Salzwedel and parts of the districts of Gardelegen , Klötze and Osterburg under the name of the district of Westliche Altmark . In the same year it was given its current name. The district remained unaffected by the 2007 district reform . The current administrative structure has existed since 2011.

There is a community association in the district :
- Verbandsgemeinde Beetzendorf-Diesdorf with the spots Apenburg-Winterfeld and Diesdorf and the communities Beetzendorf , Dehre , Jübar , Kuhfelde , Rohrberg and Wallstawe .
The cities of Arendsee (Altmark) , Kalbe (Milde) and Klötze and the Hanseatic cities of Gardelegen and Salzwedel are unitary communities .
The district has a total area of 2,293.05 km² . With an area of 632.43 km², the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen is not only by far the largest municipality in the district, but is also one of the largest municipalities in Germany . While the other four unified municipalities are between 305 and 269 km², the eight municipalities belonging to the administrative community have a maximum area of 100.52 km². The smallest municipality in the district is the municipality of Rohrberg with 38.28 km² .
Most of the district's 86,878 inhabitants are in the Hanseatic cities of Salzwedel ( 23,453 inhabitants) and Gardelegen ( 22,251 inhabitants). The three cities each have a population between 7,000 and 11,000, of the remaining municipalities one has a little over 3,000, another over 2,000, six over 1,000 and one under 1,000 inhabitants. The latter is the municipality of Wallstawe with a population of 879.
With 38 inhabitants per km², the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is one of the most sparsely populated districts in Germany. With 77 inhabitants per km², the district town of Salzwedel has by far the highest population density of all municipalities in the district, and it is also the only municipality above the district average. In three municipalities between 30 and 37 inhabitants per km² live, in the remaining nine fewer. With 19 inhabitants per km², the municipality of Dehre has the lowest population density.
