List of Cologne monuments from 1871 to 1918
In Cologne , during the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, numerous monuments , reliefs , busts , memorial stones and plaques were erected on various occasions in public spaces, mostly with the large participation of the Cologne population. In addition to privately financed monuments, many objects in the imperial era were financed by foundations and collections in the citizenry and executed by well-known artists. The most common form of monument at this time was the personal monument in the form of still images, portraits or reliefs.
Some of the monuments were destroyed or melted down during World War II. Others were still missing in the post-war period, were moved or cleared away.
The most important works of art and city history from this period are the large statues and monumental monuments, such as:
- The equestrian statue of Friedrich III on the left bank of the Rhine . at the Hohenzollern Bridge .
- The equestrian statue of Wilhelm II on the left bank of the Rhine at the Hohenzollern Bridge .
- The Bismarck Tower in the Marienburg district .
Many of the small monuments and reliefs erected during this period are located on the graves of the Melaten cemetery .
