Residential building in closed development | Market 3 (map) |
Around 1780 | House Markt 3 in Dommitzsch is right in the center of the small town, right next to the town hall. The construction of the small, simple building is a mansard roof over lying and standing chair association. This roof construction is special and rare. According to the chair, the building must have been built around 1780. Pretzscher Straße 18, a similarly designed house in the village, is marked with 1783. The market 3 is partially basement with a barrel vault. On a historical photo from 1906 you can still see the old division of the openings on the upper floor and the windows that are flush with the outside and point to a half-timbered wall. Exposed areas inside confirm the presence of trusses.
Apart from the historical significance of the roof structure, cellar and the half-timbered wall, the Markt 3 building, in conjunction with the town hall and St. Mary's Church, also has an urban significance. As part of the core development of Dommitzsch, it is also important in terms of urban development history. |

Railway bridge | To Wiesengrund (map) |
1890 | The railway bridge with wing walls over the Grenzbach is of particular importance in terms of building and traffic history. The passage is part of the Pratau – Torgau railway line and is located at kilometer 29.51. The route connected Pratau, now in Brandenburg, with Torgau, which was then still Prussian . The line, a branch line, was laid out on the initiative of the neighboring communities and the industrial companies located there, including Tonwerke Dommitzsch. They hoped for an economic upswing in the otherwise agricultural region. Both Pratau and Torgau were already connected to national rail networks. Later on, the route was also of military importance. During the GDR era, there was an ammunition store near Elsnig that had its own siding. |

^ Dommitzsch station:
The Dommitzsch station was set up in 1890 by the Prussian State Railway as part of the construction of the Pratau (Pretzsch) –Torgau line. The largest train station on the route has been almost completely preserved and, in addition to the existing buildings, has a large number of legacies that are important in terms of technology. The entrance building, which has been preserved as a yellow brick building with a surrounding frieze, is of architectural significance. The preserved counter and the control panel for controlling the traffic are still there today. The station restaurant with adjoining garden was previously located in a northern extension of the building. Next to it is still today the yellow clinker toilet block with the room layout that was furnished during the construction period. The platform connects to the east of the station building. Around 1942/43, an extension for a mechanical signal box was built here. This is only partially preserved. In addition, the tracks with the signal systems and two telecommunications systems of the station are still there today. The functional interrelationships of historical technology, which are still comprehensible today, give the train station in Dommitzsch both technical and traffic historical significance and are extremely rare in Saxony. -
↑ Deutsche Tonwarenfabrik:
Before the factory was built, the factory director Heckmann from Meißen had negotiations with the city council of Dommitzsch in September 1909. The clay store in the Labaun (city forest) and trained potters in the town were probably decisive for the location. In October 1909 a GmbH with 10 shareholders was formed, which commissioned the construction of a factory. Production could begin in May 1910. The range of products manufactured was very diverse. Pots, bowls, cups, jugs, hot water bottles, coffee pots, etc. produced. In 1911 the production of terracottas and decorative ceramics was added. After the Second World War, production was resumed in 1946. The factory's products also went abroad, including Belgium, Denmark and Poland. The Dommitzsch factory was incorporated into the VEB Steingutwerk Torgau in 1963. An attempt to continue production after the fall of the Wall failed in August 1996.
The ceramic factory complex essentially consists of an elongated, single-storey clinker building with a flat hip roof. The walls are structured by pilaster strips. The system is dominated by a high forge. The workshops are housed in outbuildings. The technical equipment, such as ovens, machines, conveyor belts, etc. a. m. dates from the GDR era, but has largely been preserved in its entirety.
In addition to the German pottery works, there are a few porcelain factories in Saxony such as Freiberg, Fraureuth and Meißen (here in particular the porcelain manufactory), kilns and a few smaller potteries. Another porcelain factory in Colditz has meanwhile been demolished. Apart from the Meissen porcelain manufactory, none of the factories mentioned with equipment has probably survived. There are only insignificant remains of the once remarkable Villeroy & Boch plant in Dresden. As a result, the facility in Dommitzsch, with its largely completely traditional equipment, is now probably a rarity in the Saxon ceramic industry. The factory in Dommitzsch has been preserved in a larger hall with delivery, processing, turning, transport system and three kilns. There are also secondary rooms for workshops, custom-made products, etc.
