Around 1830 (production area with extension); between 1830 and 1872 (old boiler house); around 1880 (production building); around 1910 (technical equipment); 1911 (chimney) Of great importance in terms of urban history, industrial and technical history as well as building and construction history. The chemical bleaching, dyeing and finishing company FA Hempel was one of the most important Plauen companies of the 19th and early 20th centuries and one of the largest regional institutions in this branch of industry. This can still be seen today in the extensively preserved and well-designed building stock on the site on Hofwiesenstrasse, as well as in the machine hall of the Dürerstrasse branch plant that was still preserved from what was originally an equally considerable building stock. The buildings of the bleaching, dyeing and finishing plant are still today evidence of a city that was once rich in industrial operations and was the capital of Saxon embroidery and finishing for white goods. In addition to spinning mills, weaving mills of white cotton goods, also called Plauen goods, twisting mills and embroidery, there were a total of 16 dye works and 13 bleaching and finishing plants in Plauen around 1895. Today the Hempelsche factory is the only finishing plant from the 19th century that has been preserved in Plauen and is therefore unique.

The building stock that has grown over time (from 1830 to the early 20th century) is a testimony to constant use and expansion through various construction methods. The sober-looking façade design, sometimes used throughout, is punctuated by unusual structural accents, such as the portal of the administration building (administration building deleted due to loss of substance in 2019), so that the existing building is also of importance in terms of architectural history. Above all, the production building is also interesting in terms of building construction history, as it has a special supporting structure made of cast iron columns, iron trusses and diagonally braced tie rods on the first floor.

Since hardly any evidence of the original use of the building has been preserved, the partly still existing machine foundations and wall openings in the various buildings, but above all the largely preserved tenter frame system with sashes in production building 7, are of great document value. In spite of its incompleteness, it is possibly one of the last remaining such facilities in a finishing facility in Saxony around 1910 and is therefore of importance in terms of technology history. Likewise, the water tower for service water in this form as the conversion of an industrial chimney is rare in Saxony and of great importance in terms of technology history.

Detailed memorial texts

  1. Machine house of the former chemical bleaching, dyeing and finishing plant FA Hempel in Dürerstraße 30a : In
1830 Friedrich August Hempel founded his bleaching, dyeing and finishing plant and initially settled between Bleichstraße and Hofwiesenstraße (see 09246563). His sons August and Richard later took over the company and added two entrepreneurial villas to this complex (see 09246562 and 09246564).
The branch on Dürerstrasse was not set up until 1884 and around 1890 consisted of two building complexes located parallel to the courtyard entrance. On the right there was a three-storey production building with a single-storey boiler house and machine house connected to the south, including the associated chimney. To the north of the building complex was a two-story administration building. To the left of the courtyard entrance was another three-story production building.
By 1930 the complex had expanded in a south-westerly direction to include a production building with a tower extension, a new boiler house with a chimney and a water tower. The old, now obsolete boiler house on the south-eastern boundary of the property could therefore be replaced by the machine house that is still preserved today as a power station. The former production building to the north was extended from six to eight window axes and a single-storey extension was added to the south.
As a result of the air raids on Plauen between 1944 and 1945, the branch plant in Dürerstraße suffered considerable war damage, so that after the war the refining plant only started operations at the older location in Hofwiesenstraße. In the years that followed, the machine house was used by a joinery and furniture maker and only slightly changed. In addition, the eastern production building and the administration building have been significantly changed structurally.

    Building description:
The single-storey machine house with a rectangular floor plan and high ground floor has a relatively flat truncated pyramid roof on which a roof lantern with slightly sloping walls, large windows and a pyramid roof is placed. The wall surfaces consist of plastered brickwork with a slightly protruding base area and are broken up by rectangular windows. Access is via a two-flight flight of stairs on the southwest side.
The interior is characterized by an architectural design of the wall surfaces with pilaster strips, cornices, toothed friezes and baroque windows under the roof lantern. Particular emphasis is placed on the partition opposite the entrance. Here, an elongated, three-step conical staircase forms a narrow platform, above which a control panel for controlling the power station was set into the partition wall, which is now filled with brickwork.

    Technical equipment:
Of the previously existing technical equipment, only two old transformers as well as insulators and cable remnants from the time of construction have been preserved in the basement, but the number of transformer cells still visible allows conclusions to be drawn about the original number of transformers.
