List of Knights of the Order of Michael
This page contains a list of the Knights of the Order of St. Michael ( Ordre de Saint-Michel ).
The Ordre de Saint-Michel was founded on August 1, 1469. Originally the number of living members of the Michael Order was limited to 31, then to 36. In 1565 the limit was officially raised to 50 in the course of the wars of religion, and in 1578 to 100. In fact, the official limit was usually exceeded by far: when Henri III came to power. in 1574 the order is said to have comprised around 700 knights. Also because of this numerical expansion suffered the Order, especially against the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Garter a significant loss of prestige. Not least in response to this, Henri III. 1578 the Ordre du Saint-Esprit . With their appointment, its members automatically belonged to the Order of Michael. The members of the Ordre de Saint-Michel were "Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roi", provided they did not also belong to the Ordre du Saint-Esprit, and "Chevaliers des Ordres du Roi", provided they belonged to the Ordre du Saint-Esprit and thus also belonged to the Ordre de Saint-Michel, called.
