action
Alloune is a pensioner and a widower. The 65-year-old worked for decades on the island of Gorée off Dakar in the Museum of the History of Slaves . Now as a pensioner, he is fulfilling a dream: he will travel to the USA to see the other side of the history of slaves.
Alloune travels to South Carolina , where he visits a former plantation that documents the life of slaves and slave owners as a museum. His nephew Hassan lives in New York City in Little Senegal , the Senegalese community in Harlem . But the black world is just as foreign to the African, and suddenly he learns that there is even racism among blacks. The Americans of color stand above the Africans. He's having a hard time making friends.
Only when Alloune meets his relative Ida Robinson does he feel better. Ida runs a newspaper kiosk and offers Alloune work. For Alloune, the agile woman becomes an illustrative example of the life of former African slaves in America today. But Alloune is slowly becoming too pushy for Ida.
Back in Senegal , Alloune visits his old workplace. A young museum guide has taken over his job and tells the tourists the story of the transport of the slaves to America. However, the young man no longer speaks allounes in the affected style, but tries to entertain the tourists with his stories. Alloune looks out to sea to where America is.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films described the film as a “melancholy blues”, which tells in “almost static images of subliminal racism and the insurmountable contrasts of cultures”. The “poetic film” questions the “American way of life” and “at the same time finds a balance between strong feelings and critical distance”.
