Local Heroes is a non-commercial band competition for young up-and-coming bands.

Germany

The contest has been held in Germany since 1990 and is organized and coordinated by the association “Aktion Musik / local heroes eV” ( Salzwedel ). The primary goal of the association is to create good performance opportunities for young bands and to make the bands known in their home region and beyond. With the support network founded in 2010, bands and solo performers have an additional platform for performances, individual coaching, tour buses, etc.

Other projects of the association include a. the internet magazine “local-heroes.de”, the “open stage local heroes warm up” and local heroes Yourope. Furthermore, Aktion Musik is the coordination point for the youth culture network of Saxony-Anhalt .

In the socio-cultural center “Hanseat” in Salzwedel, the association operates the “youth culture floor”. In the context of open youth work there are u. a. Rehearsal rooms and the “one louder studio”.

Austria

Here the nationwide coordination of the association "enemy.at" has taken over. The objective is to be equated with that of the association “Aktion Musik / local heroes eV”.

In addition to coordinating Local Heroes Austria, enemy.at also organizes concerts and festivals and also operates an internet magazine. There is a cooperation with the web radio Radio7.at.

Hungary

Since 2006 Local Heroes Hungary has been taking place in Pécs as part of the “Rockmarathon” festival.

Romania

Local Heroes Romania has been taking place there since 2010. The contest is organized by " Transylvania Event Management".

Switzerland

Since the end of 2011, Local Heroes has also been represented in Switzerland by the Basel- based association “leimbeat.ch”. The specialty of the Leimbeat Band Contest is that the entire event, castings, performances and supporting program are organized and carried out by young people themselves. The association implements its ideas and visions in harmony with the needs of the local young music scene. Leimbeat is young people for young people, from the scene for the scene.

Rest of Europe

In November 2010, the first European final of the Local Heroes Contest local heroes yourope was held in Pécs. Participating countries were Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Croatia, Belgium, Romania, Denmark and Germany. The winner was Rufus Spencer from Denmark.

For financial reasons there was no European final in 2011. In 2012 the European final was in Vienna in November . In 2013 the European finals were held in Magdeburg .

procedure

Germany

A winner will be determined in each of the participating federal states . Depending on the ideology, the audience and jury have different voting shares from country to country.

The state winners then compete against each other in a national final. At the end there is an official audience winner, a winner of the jury rating and an overall winner, which results from 60% jury decision and 40% audience rating.

In 2010 over 1,500 bands performed in Germany. It was played in front of around 90,000 spectators at 200 competition events.

Austria

In the preliminary rounds, depending on the location and organizer, up to 12 bands meet each evening. The jury winner and the audience winner go on to the intermediate round to undergo the same procedure. The winning bands determined from this then play in the 5 regional finals ( East = Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland ; West = Tyrol and Vorarlberg ; North = Salzburg and Upper Austria ; South I = Styria ; South II = Carinthia ), from which ultimately the winners in the federal final rising up. In the federal final, the jury and audience winners as well as the overall winner will be determined. The federal final took place annually in Vienna until 2013, in 2014 it was held for the first time at the festival site of the Surf World Cup in Podersdorf am See . 2015 the final took place for the first time as part of an "open air" event in the arena in Vienna.

From 2007 to 2015 there were around 300 bands from all federal states at the start in Austria . A record number of participants was achieved in 2013. More than 400 bands had registered for the contest! The competition did not take place in 2017.

Switzerland

In the preliminary round, which was organized by the Leimbeat association and only held in the Basel region in 2012, 4 bands met each evening. The winners were once again able to demonstrate their skills in the Swiss finals. InBalkon emerged as the winning band in the first Swiss Local Heroes year.

Sponsor Germany

The patron of local heroes has been Rainer Robra, Minister of State and Minister of Culture in the State of Saxony-Anhalt since 2016. Stephan Dorgerloh , the minister of culture of Saxony-Anhalt , was the patron of the network until April 2016 . Furthermore, companies and organizations from Saxony-Anhalt in particular promote the competition, which was founded in Saxony-Anhalt in 1989. Athletes like Stefan Kretzschmar or bands like Madsen, Silly , Subway to Sally or Adam Perry The Bloodhound Gang also support him as godparents.
