Dogtown Boys (also Lords of Dogtown ) is a sports drama from 2005 and describes the rise and fall of the legendary Z-Boys , a skateboard team that had a significant influence on the skateboarding world in the late 1970s .
action
Avid boys Jay, Stacy and Tony hang out daily on Venice Beach Bay to surf the waves . However, these areas are hoarded by "locals" who only let new people surf "their spot" via detours. Therefore, the boys, who mostly come from broken families, meet a few other friends in the Zephyr Surf Shop , which is run by Skip Engblom . The introduction of a new material for skateboard wheels inspires them to form a skateboard team out of the young people, which makes it their task to transfer surfing to the street. With great enthusiasm, the friends begin to revive a recreational sport that was believed to be dead and to develop it further. Due to the great drought in California at that time, swimming pools on private properties were empty, which were secretly used for training ("pool skating") and created a completely new style.
After the sport celebrates its comeback and the first competitions are held, the boys take part as the Zephyr Skate Team or Z-Boys in the skateboard contest in Del Mar and surprise the nation and the companies present with a new style. The industry soon steps in and puts the friendship of the team members to the test. While Stacy ( Peralta ) approaches the matter more responsibly, Tony's ( Alva ) ego grows on success or Jay ( Adams ) rejects it and so the first breaks occur. After a few bad experiences, the skaters meet one last time at the property of Sid, who has a brain tumor, to skate in the pool that was emptied especially for them.
criticism
"The very entertaining film is less concerned with the constant repetition of skate stunts than with dealing with interpersonal conflicts and also wins thanks to a remarkable ensemble performance."
Subject
The film is kind of a biography of the origins of freestyle skateboarding as it is practiced today. The Zephyr Team is legendary in the history of the sport and primarily introduced Vert-Style , the basis for today's competitions. The film also deals with the risk of losing reality in a steep career and the social consequences that arise from it. From the US point of view, the film is a classic Hollywood production that deals with the feeling of coming from a poor background, and being able to make a dream come true without financial support.
various
- Stacy Peralta , who published the multi-award-winning documentary Dogtown & Z-Boys in 2001 , wrote the screenplay for Lords of Dogtown , which received limited acceptance from the skateboarding community.
- Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva took on the role of the doubles of their characters in some scenes.
- Most of the original Z-Boys ( Stacy Peralta , Tony Alva , Jay Adams , Jim Muir , Bob Biniak , Skip Engblom ) appear in small supporting roles or were responsible for the skate choreographies and stunt doubles.
- Tony Hawk appears in a small role in which he parodies himself (he's an astronaut who has no idea about skating).
- The biggest mistake in the script is that Stacy Peralta did not have to compete to be accepted, but was in the team from the start, in Del Mar 1975 he did not make it into the final standings, Jay Adams finished third, Tony Alva fourth. However, the film names Stacy Peralta the winner and inserts controversy between Tony Alva and the judges.
- Star director David Fincher took over the executive production and would have originally intended Fred Durst as director. After a number of differences, however, he left the team for another film, paving the way for Catherine Hardwicke .
- Many statements, sets, designs, soundtracks, songs and descriptions are partly taken 1: 1 from the documentation Dogtown & Z-Boys from 2001 (here, too, Stacy Peralta directed or wrote the script).
- The punk band that played during the brawl are Rise Against .
Awards
Heath Ledger was named Actor of the Year by the Central Ohio Film Critics in 2006, among other things for this film . It was also Lords of Dogtown for five Teen Choice Awards nominations.
