Truck Stop is a German country - band from Seevetal - mesh ( district of Harburg ), south of Hamburg . The name comes from English , where it means "truck rest area", equivalent to the German motorway service stations or truck stops .
history
The Truck Stop group was founded in Hamburg in 1973. She initially played English-language country music, rock 'n' roll, and blues, and released four albums. The founding members are:
- Günter "Cisco" Berndt (* December 12, 1942 in Hamburg, † December 31, 2014 in Maschen )
- Burkhard "Lucius" Reichling (* March 8, 1947 in Berlin , † August 14, 2012 in Hamburg)
- Rainer Bach (born December 14, 1947 in Bielefeld )
- Erich Doll (born July 31, 1948 in Kolbermoor , † June 6, 2019)
- Wolfgang "Teddy" Ibing (born August 10, 1948 in Bergen an der Dumme )
- Eckart Hofmann (* 1943 in Kisdorf )
Despite various TV appearances, for example in the music store , the group's albums sold increasingly poorly, whereupon a change of style was decided. The members of the group agreed on the focus on country in German. In order to give musical expression to the change, Hofmann on saxophone was replaced by Berndt on acoustic guitar. Rudolf "Stempel" Steinmetz took over Berndt's part as bassist.
Career
Joe Menke first produced a demo tape with the German country band in his Maschen recording studio and presented it to several record companies without success. Telefunken finally offered the group a record deal in 1973. The first LP Truck Stop from 1973 still contained English-language titles and was sold 50,000 times. In addition to Menke, Volker Heintzen acted as a sound engineer. This constellation was to become the most important of the group and lay the foundation for the long-term success of Truck Stop. The LP Can't Stop Truck Stop , recorded in 1974, was also in English.
Menke then gave the group the idea in 1977 to present German-language country music. The result was the LP home (August 1977, published October 1977), of which 150,000 copies were sold. Klaus-Dieter Eckardt and Holger Grabowski were hired to reinforce the text and composition. The first single hit from this was Die Frau mit dem Gurt (September 1977, number 27 on the German hit parade ). Further commercial LPs such as Aufachse (June – July 1978, published October 1978,) Please, Quite Friendly (October 1979), Truck Stopp (October 1980; sold 100,000 copies) followed.
Rudolf Steinmetz was replaced on bass by today's bassist Uwe Lost on the LP Aufachse . At this time, the Dane Nils Tuxen also joined the group, which he supported with pedal steel guitar and dobro . The title I would like to hear Dave Dudley so much reached 9th place in the German singles chart in April 1978 and came from the LP Heimat . On March 17, 1979, Truck Stop took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with Take It Easy, old house (2nd place). In the group's second biggest single hit Der wilde wilde Westen (April 1980, rank 5), Menke's recording studio appears in the chorus:
"The wild, wild west
starts right behind Hamburg.
In a studio in Maschen,
right next to the autobahn"
In 1983 Rainer Bach left the group and was replaced by Knut Bewersdorff (born April 27, 1960 in Stade ). In 2003 Erich Doll left and was replaced by Dirk Schlag (born April 21, 1971 in Gifhorn ). Burkhard "Lucius" Reichling died on August 14, 2012 at the age of 65 from the consequences of pneumonia and a cancer that was diagnosed late. The founding member Cisco Berndt left the band after 40 years for health reasons. He played his last concert on December 21, 2013. He passed away a year and ten days later.
Menke's producer role with the band ended in 1995 when he retired from studio work at the age of 70. His long-time sound engineer Volker Heintzen took over this position until 2013. In the meantime, he had set up the VOX sound studio in Bendestorf , where the Truck Stop LP No. 1 was recorded.
