The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 took place under the title Ein Lied für Jerusalem .
Moderators Carolin Reiber , who was known for her co-moderation with Maxl Graf on the television program Funny Musicians , and radio moderator Thomas Gottschalk , who has moderated Bayern 3 since 1971 (Pop after eight), led through the show . Directed by Rainer Bertram .

The Bayerische Rundfunk introduced a new mode this year.
A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the twelve finalists from 443 entries.
After the preliminary decision, which this year took place two weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem, 500 representative radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the 12 titles had run through the polling institute Infratest. During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale. This system was tested without any problems in a dress rehearsal two weeks before the decision.
In order not to endanger sales for the record companies, positions 4 to 12 were not announced in the final result. Symbolically, these performers all got fourth place.
In the program Ein Lied für Jerusalem: 20 years later , exactly two decades after the end of the event, presented by the presenter Thomas Brennicke and broadcast on the radio of the Bavarian Radio , the BR handed down complete final result announced.

Tony Holiday had his breakthrough in 1977 with the title Dance Samba with Me, which was the cover of Raffaella Carrà's title A far l'amore comincia tu .
Hanne Haller was a trained sound engineer and had success as a composer in 1978 under the pseudonym Hansi Echer with the title Where the wind blows the leaves, which was sung by Karel Gott .
The Blattuß brothers were a popular idiot group known for combining familiar melodies with new lyrics. In 1978 they had a No. 2 hit, Kreuzberg Nights, with which they were in the charts for several weeks. Members of the group were Beppo Pohlmann , Jürgen von der Lippe , Harald Gribkowsky , Harald Wolff , Hans Marquardt and Hans Werner Olm .
Ingrid Peters had her breakthrough in 1976 with Come on over and received the Golden Europe for the LP of the same name .
Linda G. Thompson was a singer with the Les Humphries Singers and was a founding member of the Silver Convention , which she left in 1976. Silver Convention represented Germany at the ESC 1977 .
Truck Stop is a country and pop band from Seevetal - Maschen, founded in 1973 . In 1976 she had her breakthrough with I would love to hear Dave Dudley .
Bernhard Brink was known as an interpreter of German-language productions of well-known and successful English-language pop songs.
Dschinghis Khan was a casting band put together by Ralph Siegel , which consisted of the members Steve Bender , Wolfgang Heichel , Leslie Mandoki , Edina Pop , Louis Hendrik Potgieter and Henriette Heichel .
Edina Pop already competed in the German preliminary round in 1972 .
Paola is a native Swiss , came to their home country at the Euro Vision Song Contest 1969 in Madrid, finishing behind the four winners of 5th place in 1977 she tried in Switzerland once again, but finished in the Swiss preliminary decision to Euro Vision Song Contest in 1977 with the Title Le livre blanc only 2nd place.
Roberto Blanco , Schlagerurgestein with many hits, already competed in the preliminary rounds in 1970 and 1973 .
Orlando Riva Sound was a German disco project by Anthony Monn and Rainer Pietsch .

The ranking of the final result is based on the 100 percent rating published for the first time on radio exactly two decades after the end of the event.

The victory of Genghis Khan surprised all professionals. Truck Stop makes it into the charts with Take It Easy, old house .
For Ingrid Peters as well as for Bernhard Brink and Hanne Haller , this preliminary decision meant the final breakthrough.
In Israel , Dschinghis Khan with the title of the same name placed himself at number 1 in the charts for 4 weeks and managed to stay in the Israeli charts for 29 weeks.
Dschinghis Khan took 4th place with 85 points at the Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem .
