Ludwig Dietrich Karl von Schmalensee (born January 29, 1762 in Grellenberg, Grimmen district ; † April 26, 1826 in Neubrandenburg ) was a Prussian major general and lord of Gut Sieden-Bollentin in the village of the same name, Siedenbollentin near Treptow an der Tollense in Western Pomerania .

Life

His parents were the heir to Grellenberg Kurt (Conrad) Friedrich von Schmalensee († 1813) and his wife Eva Amalie, née von Engel (* 1738). His brother Dietrich Karl Ludwig von Schmalensee (1768–1857) became a Prussian lieutenant general .

Military career

On January 1, 1777 Schmalensee came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Lengefeld" . On September 19, 1777 he was promoted to ensign and in 1778/79 he fought in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On April 17, 1791 he became Premier Lieutenant and took part in the siege of Warsaw in 1794/95 during the campaign in Poland .

On October 7, 1797 he was promoted to staff captain, on April 1, 1799 he received a patent from March 2, 1796. On October 29, 1803 he was then appointed captain and company commander. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the defense of Danzig . On April 9, 1807 he became major and on June 29, 1807 he received the order Pour le Mérite for Danzig . On September 7, 1807 he received command of the III. Battalion. On January 1, 1808, he was appointed battalion commander in Infantry Regiment No. 6, 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment .

First, on May 8, 1810, Schmalensee was entrusted with the command of the West Prussian Grenadier Battalion, and on June 9, 1810, he was appointed battalion commander. On October 1, 1811, he was appointed regimental commander ad interim by the battalion. During Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812 he acted as leader of the 5th mobile infantry regiment from March 28, 1812. With this association he fought in the battle near Thomsdorf. On March 4, 1813, the regiment was disbanded and Schmalensee came back to the 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment. For the campaign he received the Order of the Red Eagle III on March 26, 1813 . Class. On June 5, 1813 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and regimental commander. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he became brigade commander in the II Army Corps ad interim on September 4, 1813 . During the war he fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm and Leipzig . For Großgörschen Schmalensee received the Iron Cross II. Class and for Bautzen the Russian Order of St. Anna II. Class. On December 8, 1813, he became a colonel , but on September 20, 1814, he received his departure as major general with a pension of 800 thalers . He died on April 26, 1826 in Neubrandenburg in Mecklenburg.
