Ludwig Stössel
Ludwig Stössel , also Stoessel , (born February 12, 1883 in Lockenhaus , † January 29, 1973 in Beverly Hills ) was an Austrian actor .
Life
He made his stage debut in 1900 and played in Sigmaringen in 1903 , in Ulm in 1904 , then in Posen and Salzburg , where he made his debut as a theater director . After the First World War he worked as an actor and director at the Thalia Theater in Wroclaw .
In 1925 he came to Berlin , where he appeared on the theaters there under the direction of Max Reinhardt , at the German Art Theater and at the State Theater until 1933 . In addition, he took on a growing number of film roles from 1926.
After the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933, the Jewish actor acted for the last time at the Theater am Nollendorfplatz and then went to Vienna . He worked there at the Raimund Theater and from 1936 again under Max Reinhardt at the Theater in der Josefstadt . At the Salzburg Festival he embodies the devil in Jedermann and Wagner in Goethe's Faust . His work for the film was limited to the role of a pastor in The Pastor of Kirchfeld after Ludwig Anzengruber .
After the annexation of Austria , he emigrated with his wife Lore Birn via Paris to London , where he took part in two British film productions. In 1939 he came to the USA and got his first film role there in 1940. The pestle has been used in numerous Hollywood productions. Mostly he embodied nice, older men like the father of Gary Cooper in The Great Litter . His brief appearance as the European émigré Mr. Leuchtag in the film Casablanca ("What watch? - Ten watch - such much") is particularly popular . Here, as in several other films, Ilka Grüning played his wife.
Stössel continued his career in America after the end of the war and portrayed Albert Einstein in the film The Beginning or the End in 1946. He was also known for a series of commercials for the Gallo winery , where he was a winemaker for a decade embodied.
In 1950 he came to Vienna and made a guest appearance at the Renaissance theater . In 1960 he was seen for the last time in the cinema in the Elvis Presley film Café Europa .
