Ludwig von Hagn (born November 23, 1819 in Munich , † January 15, 1898 in Munich) was a German painter .

Life

Hagn was the son of the businessman Karl von Hagn and his wife Josepha Schwab. The actress Charlotte von Hagn was his sister.

After only a short school visit, Hagn moved to the cadet institute in his hometown at the request of his family. On the occasion of a visit to his sister in Berlin in 1840 , Hagn discovered art, especially painting. He left the cadet corps and became a student of the marine painter Wilhelm Krause . The following year, Hagn returned from Berlin to Munich and became a student at the art academy . His lecturers there included the history painter Clemens von Zimmermann , the lithographer Peter Hess and the landscape painter Albert Zimmermann .

In 1846, Hagn was one of the first Munich painters to go to Antwerp . He became a student of the Belgian painters Gustave Wappers and Eugène-François de Block ; he later accompanied the latter to Brussels for a few years . In 1850 Hagn went to Berlin for three years, where he studied architecture and also came into contact with the work of Adolph Menzel . This and his visits to the palaces and gardens of Sanssouci brought him closer to the Rococo .

Hagn spent the years 1853 to 1855 in Paris , where he was mainly interested in the works of Léon Cogniet , Paul Delaroche , Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury . During this time, Hagn also became friends with his Belgian colleagues Florent Willems and Alfred Stevens .

In 1855 Hagn returned to Germany and settled in Munich as a freelance painter. Soon a small circle of artists formed around him, but it never became a “school”. There Hagn became friends and a. with Franz von Lenbach , Victor Müller and August von Pettenkofen .

Between 1863 and 1865, Hagn traveled to Italy to study. His extended stay in Rome brought about a departure from the Rococo. The history painter Friedrich Pecht described Hagn as "... the first colourist of Munich genre painting ". Through his early work, Eduard von Grützner shows himself to be an equal successor to Hagn. Albert von Keller should also be named as such .

Ludwig von Hagn died on January 15, 1898 in Munich at the age of 78.

Hagn's artistic oeuvre spans a wide range, from history painting to rococo genre painting to antique depictions, preferably from the 17th century. The contemporary criticism raved u. a. von Hagn's “Poetry of Mood” and praised its “harmony of color”.
