The Lumineers are a five-piece American folk-rock - band from Denver , Colorado .
history
The group was founded in 2002 by guitarist and singer Wesley Schultz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites. The two grew up in Ramsey , New Jersey and had previously played in various bands. Schultz was the best friend of Fraite's older brother Joshua, who died of a drug overdose when he was 19. Together they processed the experience musically and performed in the New York area.
After living in the east coast metropolis became too expensive for them and they moved to Denver, they looked for someone who could help them with the cello. They found Neyla Pekarek, who has classical training on several instruments, and from then on they formed a trio. They had their first appearances on the youth stage of the Meadowlark Club and they developed according to their own folk-rock and Americana style. They finished their first demo EP in 2009, produced a second two years later and went on tour in the USA .
They had their breakthrough in late 2011 when their song Ho Hey was used in the TV series Hart of Dixie . They signed a recording deal with Dualtone Records and released their debut album The Lumineers in April 2012 . It rose to number 77 on the US album charts and after the release of Ho Hey as a single, it rose to number 11 by September. The single reached number 13 and platinum status.
After a sold out club tour in the USA and an appearance at SXSW , they came to Europe as the opening act for The Civil Wars in autumn and also played their own shows in Germany. The single and album were released in Europe from October and they were successful in the charts first in England and later in many other countries.
Silent film actress Theda Bara is shown on the cover of her second album Cleopatra, which was released on April 8, 2016 .
Neyla Pekarek, who mainly supported the band musically with her violin playing, left the band at the end of 2018 to start a solo career.
In April 2019 the band announced their third album with the simple title III , which illuminates different chapters of the fictional Sparks family, which are mainly about alcohol addiction. The album was released on September 13, 2019.
