Lycium exsertum is a 1 to 4 m tall, openly branched shrub . Its leaves are 5 to 25 mm long, 3 to 8 mm wide and densely hairy with glands.
The flowers appear in two forms and are five-fold. The calyx is tubular-bell-shaped and densely hairy. The calyx tube has a length of 2.5 to 6 mm. The length of the calyx lobes corresponds to 1/4 to half the length of the calyx tube. The crown is broadly ovate or, conversely, ovate, whitish, greenish or purple, brown or pale lavender-colored.
