Lycium americanum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium americanum is an upright, 1 to 4 m high shrub . The leaves are succulent and hairless. They are 5 to 60 mm long and 4 to 29 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and four or five-fold. The calyx is tubular or cup-shaped, it is balding or permanently hairy glandular. The calyx tube is 1.5 to 3 mm long and covered with calyx lobes 0.5 to 1.5 mm long. The crown is tubular or funnel-shaped, it is white, whitish-green, lavender or violet in color, the veins are dark purple. The corolla tube is 5 to 8 mm long, the corolla lobes 2.5 to 4.5 mm. The stamens are hairy.
The fruit is a red, spherical to egg-shaped berry that is 5 to 13 mm long and 4 to 10 mm wide.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The species is distributed in South America and the Antilles and occurs there in the Bahamas , Cuba , Haiti , in the Dominican Republic , in Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador , Peru , Bolivia , Paraguay and Argentina .
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other North and South American species of the genus. The species is closely related to Lycium infaustum , Lycium exsertum , Lycium Fremontii , Lycium parishii , Lycium texanum , Lycium torreyi , Lycium berlandieri , Lycium andersonii , Lycium elongatum , Lycium athium and Lycium minimum .
