Mueslüm Maqomayev (singer)
Muslum Məhəmməd oğlu Maqomayev ( Muslim Magomayev , Muslim Magomaev or Muslum Magomaev , Russian Муслим Магомаев ., Scientific transliteration Muslim Magomaev * 17th August 1942 in Baku ; † 25. October 2008 in Moscow ) was a Soviet - Azerbaijani - Russian singers. He had great success as an opera ( baritone ) as well as a pop and dazzling singer. He was also the orchestra director for many years .
Life
Muslum Maqomayev was as a citizen of that, the USSR belonging, Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was born in Baku. His parents, his mother an actress , his father a stage designer who died in the Great Patriotic War , named him after his grandfather, the Azerbaijani composer of the same name (1885–1937).
From the serious part
Until 1968 Maqomayev studied piano , composition and singing at the Baku Music Conservatory . The finalist of the Festival of Azerbaijani Culture in 1962 in the Moscow Kremlin was considered a great talent and in 1963 got a permanent engagement at the Axundov Opera and Ballet Theater of the Azerbaijani State Academy in Baku. Parallel to his studies, he worked as a soloist in various concert halls and opera houses in Germany and abroad in 1964 and 1965 . So he was a guest a. at La Scala in Milan and achieved great audience recognition in particular as Rossini's Figaro and Puccini's Scarpia . He finally turned down the invitation to the Moscow Bolshoi Theater in order to turn to popular music. This was the beginning of his career as a Soviet entertainer.
To the easy muse
Maqomayev soon had great success. At times he gave several concerts a day in large halls, and his records sold millions of times. After some successful concert tours, u. a. he sang at the Olympia in Paris in 1966 and 1969 , but Jekaterina Furzewa personally refused him permission to go on further tours in western countries. Müslüm Maqomayev was denied a truly international career by the state . However, his success at home continued. Since the late 1960s, especially in the 1970s to 1980s, mueslüm maqomayev was in the entire Soviet Union v. a. highly regarded as a singer of popular music. He was also a well-known artist in the GDR and other countries of the former Eastern Bloc . As early as 1969 he and Karel Gott were the musical “ draft horses ” outside the competition at the International Song Festival in Sopot, Poland . He received his first gold record for more than 4.5 million copies sold at the Midem in Cannes that same year .
People's Artist of the USSR
In 1973 Müslüm Maqomayev was awarded the honors Азәрбајҹан ССР халг артисти (People's Artist of the Azerbaijan Soviet Republic) and Народный артист СССР ( People's Artist of the USSR ). From 1975 he held the position of artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra , which he founded and which he held until 1989. In the 1990s, a conflict deepened between Maqomayev and the Azerbaijani Minister of Education, Polad Bülbüloğlu, which ultimately led to Maqomayev leaving Baku.
Maqomayev composed more than 20 songs of his own and wrote the music for several film productions, some of which he also participated in. So he played z. B. the main role in the film of the same name about the important representative of Persian Dari poetry of the 12th and 13th centuries Nizami . He was also the author of a book about Mario Lanza , which was the template for a Russian television series about the American tenor .
After a long and serious illness, Müslüm Maqomayev died on October 25, 2008. He lived with his wife, the Russian mezzo-soprano Tamara Sinjawskaja , most recently in Russia and only visited Baku occasionally.
Trivia
Müslüm Maqomayev sang Russian, English, Italian and, although he only had a poor knowledge of the Azerbaijani language , also Azerbaijani.
In 1997, the asteroid (4980), discovered in 1974 by the Russian astronomer Lyudmila Tschernych , was named Magomaev in honor of the singer.
