MAfestival Bruges
The MA Festival Bruges or Musica Antiqua Bruges in Bruges , Belgium , is a festival for early music with historical instruments and the appropriate playing technique practiced at the time . The festival, first organized in 1960, has been part of the national annual Flanders Festival since 1972 , founded in 1958. The broad program of the MA Festival Bruges includes concerts, master classes , exhibitions, an instrument market and a three-year periodically held music competition with changing instrument and vocal performances.
The mission of the festival
The idea of the founders of the festival was not just to organize another concert festival, but to create a forum for so-called early music until before 1800. Specialized musicians, instrument makers, music educators, students and music lovers were and are called to participate or invited to participate. The festival program includes exhibitions and fairs, training courses and master classes, discussion forums, lectures and guided excursions to historical destinations in Flanders.
The international competitions started in 1964, but they take place annually but with a different focus every three years, concentrating on organ competitions , in the following year (since 1965) on harpsichord and basso continuo and, since 1983, on piano contests. The three-year cycle has been completed since 1972 with recordings on sound carriers, other historical instruments, soloists (since 1984) as well as choirs and ensembles.
The organizers were able to appoint professionally versed personalities such as Gustav Leonhardt , Thurston Dart , Barbara Schlick , Barthold Kuijken , Wieland Kuijken , Wolfgang Brunner , Florian Heyerick , Friedrich Högner (1970), Ton Koopman , Frans Brüggen , Anner Bylsma , Xavier Darasse , Michel Chapuis as jurors and Scott Ross win.
