The MS Wissenschaft is an inland waterway vessel that has been used regularly as an exhibition and science ship since the early 2000s , in addition to a motorized goods ship, and is used under this name for traveling exhibitions as part of the Science Years . The ship travels through Germany and now also Austria for several months a year and shows in numerous cities as a "floating science center " changing exhibitions with exhibits that are intended to create understanding for science and research. The rest of the time, the ship sails as a "normal" motorized goods ship named Jenny and at times also as an exhibition ship with commercial exhibitions.

Details of the ship

The ship was built in 1969 at the then Elfring shipyard in Haren (Ems) as the Johann Welker ship and initially operated for a short time by the shipyard's own Elka shipping company as Vera . After a sale in the Netherlands, the ship was on the road as Van Uden 24 and has been sailing as Jenny since 1987 . The ship was originally 85 meters long and was extended to 105 meters in 1989. In 2012 it was shortened to 100 meters. It is powered by a six-cylinder - MWM engine with a power of 809  kW . The ship also has a bow thruster . The wheelhouse is adjustable in height.

Since April 2016, despite the higher price, the ship has been running on synthetic gas-to-liquid fuel (GtL) instead of the diesel fuel according to DIN EN 590, which is common in inland shipping , in order to achieve a reduction in air pollutants.

The cargo hold of the ship, which can be used for exhibition and event purposes, is around 75 meters long and 7.8 meters wide and covered inside up to 3.8 or 4.0 meters high, with hatch covers being individually roofed . Of the total area of almost 600 square meters, around 530 square meters are available for exhibitions and events. The remaining space is required for the stairs to the cargo hold, a toilet facility and a café in the rear area as well as an emergency exit in the front area of the cargo hold. A part of the area on the hatch covers with a load capacity of 500 kilograms per square meter is available as an additional usable area; the usable area is around 355 square meters.

In 2018, the “guidance and assistance system to increase the safety of navigation on inland waterways” (LAESSI) was tested on the ship. The system includes a bridge approach warning to avoid collisions between the wheelhouse or masts with bridges, a docking assistant that shows, for example, the distances to quay walls or other ships, a path guidance assistant to relieve the skipper on the route and a connecting display that shows the movement of the ship, for example , the rudder angle and the engine speed.

The ship is owned by the couple Albrecht and Karin Scheubner. The ship was to 2011 outside the time in which it was as a scientific or exhibition ship road when Partikulier ship from that in Würzburg -based MSG eG freighted.

Exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft

history

The use of the inland waterway as a science ship goes back to an idea of the University of Bremen , which sent the ship on a journey in 2002 as a “geoship” with the exhibition “Adventure Marine Research ”. Since the exhibition on the inland waterway was well received by the visitors, the Science in Dialogue (WiD) initiative of German science took over the concept and has been realizing an annual exhibition on the ship since 2003 as part of the respective science year. In the first few years the ship was named after the theme of the Science Year, since 2006 the Jenny has been going on her exhibition trips under the name "MS Wissenschaft".

The MS Wissenschaft visited numerous cities throughout Germany, which in her their tours each inland shipping sector and in particular on inland waterways can be reached. The inland port city of Basel in Switzerland , which can be reached via the Rhine, was the first foreign city on the tour plan in 2005. Since 2010, several cities on the Danube in neighboring Austria have been visited.

Until 2011, the MS Wissenschaft was a project of the Science in Dialogue initiative, which has the legal form of a non-profit GmbH (gGmbH). The project was financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and, in a few years, by various foundations. The BMBF has been the organizer of MS Wissenschaft since 2012 , while Wissenschaft im Dialog gGmbH has been realizing the exhibition ship as general contractor since then. The majority of the exhibits are contributed by scientific institutes and facilities.

The barge is converted every year for use as MS Wissenschaft . The hold becomes an exhibition space that can be reached via a staircase in front of the wheelhouse. In the cargo space, which has been converted into an exhibition space, there is a reception area and a small café next to the exhibition.
