Maéwo (also: Aurora ) is an island in the Southwest Pacific New Hebrides and part of the island republic of Vanuatu . It is one of the three main islands of the Penama province and has an area of ​​around 303 km².

Maéwo is 100 kilometers east of Espiritu Santo . The elongated 56 kilometers long and on average only five kilometers wide island is separated from its southern neighbor island Pentecôte by the Patterson Passage .

The island is hilly (up to 811 m high) and densely forested. Some settlements can be found on the coastal strip, such as Lakarere on the northeast coast. In 1979, 1822 people lived on Maéwo.
