Manfred Barthel (General)

Manfred Barthel (born December 26, 1928 in Werdau ; † December 27, 1989 in Strausberg ) was a lieutenant general of the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic .

Life and career

Manfred Barthel was born as the son of a master printer in Werdau , Zwickau Land district. There he attended the city high school and passed the Abitur . In 1944 he joined the Reich Labor Service and was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1945 . After the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht , Barthel was taken as a soldier in Soviet captivity, from which he soon returned. After an internship in the textile industry in his hometown of Werdau, he began studying at the then workers and farmers faculty at the University of Leipzig in 1947 , which he successfully completed in 1949. During this time he became a member of the SED .

Military career

Education and Uses

Manfred Barthel joined the armed organs of the GDR as a volunteer applicant on November 28, 1949 , successfully completed an officer training at the People's Police School in Zwickau by 1950 and then stayed briefly as a teacher and trainer at this school. From 1951 to 1952 he was employed as the first assistant to the chief of staff at the VP office in Frankenberg. Then he was deployed as a department commander of the flak department (comparable to battalion) also in Frankenberg until 1953 .

From 1953 to 1954 he was assigned to a special course at a military academy for air defense in what was then the Soviet Union. After his return, M. Barthel was appointed as the deputy commander for general affairs of the flak command of the KVP office Potsdam II until 1955 . Until 1956 he had a follow-up assignment there as chief of staff. From 1956 to 1958 there was a further assignment as a commander in the then Flak Regiment 5 (1958 relocation of FR-5 from Ückermünde to Stallberg), an association of the 3rd Air Defense Division of the NVA Air Force / Air Defense, newly created at that time . Afterwards, M. Barthel was appointed head of the air protection department in the LSK / LV command, which had also been created shortly before . From 1960 to 1966 he was deputy head of LSK / LV for anti-aircraft missile forces . During this time he was instrumental in building this new branch of the Armed forces ( NVA LSK / LV involved). He was then delegated from 1966 to 1968 for general staff training at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces .

Service as a general

After successfully completing his studies, Colonel Barthel returned to the post of deputy chief LSK / LV for anti-aircraft missile troops, which he held until 1972. In 1972 he was appointed Deputy Chief LSK / LV and Chief of Staff as the successor to Major General Wolfgang Reinhold . On March 1, 1973, Colonel Barthel was made major general and on October 7, 1979 he was promoted to lieutenant general . In 1986 he was replaced by Major General Rolf Berger .

From 1986 to 1987 GenLtn Barthel was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff in the United High Command of the Warsaw Pact participating states . Then he was until his death in December 1989 z. b. V. works for the Deputy Minister and Chief of Staff at the MfNV in Strausberg.
