Manuel Sánchez Acosta

Manuel Sánchez Acosta (born August 18, 1914 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † April 19, 2006 in New York City ) was a Dominican doctor and composer.

The son of General Manuel Sánchez Suero played drums at the age of eight in the orchestra of his uncle Dindín Acosta , which also included the violinist Luis Alberti and the tenor saxophonist Sixto Brea . He studied music at the Academia de la Banda Municipal in Olímpica and founded the group Casino with Enriquillo Sánchez when he was sixteen .

After studying medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo , he joined the Santo Domingo Jazz Band with Billo Frómeta in 1936 (with Simó Damirón , piano and accordion, Nando Frómeta , tenor saxophone, Cecilio Comprés , trumpet and Negrito Chapuseaux , vocals). In 1937 he separated from the group and continued his studies from 1941 in Montreal and New York. in the 1960s he opened a piano bar in El Conde with Enriquillo Sánchez . There, among others, Billo Frómeta, Negrito Chapuseaux, Simó Damirón, Sylvia De Grasse , Salvador Sturla , Babín Echavarría , Luis Alberti and Juan Lockward , and socially critical merengues such as El Guardia con el tolete , Papá Bocó , El ají caribe and Espera quisqueyana were sung which eventually led to the intervention of Police Chief Felipe Pirela .

Sánchez composed boleros such as Paraíso Soñado , Mi adoración , Ven , Maribel and A primera vista , by musicians of several generations such as Juan Lockward , Alberto Beltrán , Machito , Tito Puente , Rafael Colón , Sonia Silvestre , Fernando Casado and Sergio Vargas , Arturo Sandoval , Michel Camilo and José Antonio Molina . He practiced as a doctor for more than 50 years in his Park Avenue and West End New York apartments and country estate, overseeing artists such as Ernesto Lecuona , Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and Paquito D'Rivera .

In 2009 he took part in the Congreso de Boléro in Centro León . For the production FolkHoy he recorded the title La tambora y el zumbador with Sonia Silvestre and Jorge Taveras . In 2002 he performed at the Teatro Nacional with the jazz musicians Michel Camilo, Paquito D'Rivera, Giovanni Hidalgo , Chano Domínguez and Eliane Elias . Danny Rivera paid homage to him at the La Fiesta theater with a recital entitled Paraíso soñado . He was awarded the Orden de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella for his services to Dominican music .
